EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY:
The National Infrastructure Development Company Limited (NIDCO) is a Special Purpose State Enterprise established by the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to manage the delivery of assigned infrastructure projects. NIDCO is inviting applications for the following position for the Maritme Service.
ABLE BODIED SEAMAN – AB
JOB SUMMARY
The Able-Bodied seaman, upon instruction from the Master/Chief Officer, performs maintenance on the deck as well as other associated equipment. They contribute significantly to the safe docking and undocking of the vessel during arrival and departure to/from port. He/she may also be required to perform watch duties from time to time.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Carries out assignments as determined by the Chief Officer and/or Master.
- Performs general maintenance, repair, sanitation and upkeep of the vessel, equipment, and areas on the deck (incl. washing, cleaning, painting, chipping, etc.).
- Assists with the embarking and disembarking of passengers, ensuring their safety at all times.
- Assists with loading and offloading of vehicles and/or cargo ensuring compliance with all necessary procedures and securing arrangements.
- Under the direction of the Master and Chief Officer coordinates the safe mooring and unmooring of the vessel.
- Stands watch on the Bridge or wherever directed to ensure the safe navigation of the vessel.
- To assist with the training of junior seafarers.
- Participates in safety drills, meetings and audits.
- Ensures safe practices are observed while carrying out day-to-day tasks.
- Performs other related duties, as required.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
- Reports to the Chief Officer
KEY SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- A good command of Maritime English and phrases.
- Efficient Deck Hand (EDF) certification.
- Proficient in rope works, handling and mooring operations including avoiding associated dangers
- Capable of operating all safety equipment (incl. fire extinguishers, fire and bilge pumps, life rafts, etc.) as directed and when required.
- Capable of imparting proper knowledge to junior seafarers.
Qualifications, Experience and Training
- STCW II/5 and V/1 Deck Rating certification from Maritime Services Division, MOWT.
- Must have at least 3 years working experience as AB on vessels (HSC is preferred).
- Police Certificate of Character, Crowd and Crisis Management, Security Awareness Certificates.
- Trinidad and Tobago Seafarers Medical Certificate plus 10 point Drug and Alcohol test

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Obligated to execute the safety and environmental policy on board
- Comply with (inter)national legislation, flag state requirements, accepted industry standards, Company decrees and contracts
- Supervises work of the stewards and assist them in their duties.
- Works closely with the catering department to ensure an efficient operation.
- Responsible for the ordering, storage and distribution of stores (cleaning and washroom supplies).
- Regularly inspecting the quality of work of the stewards and contractors ensuring conformance to company standards.
- Support problem resolution involving others in developing solutions, ensuring problem resolution is customer focused, handling unusual situations with the customer in mind, while minimizing service disruptions.
- Ensuring that work/escalated issues are addressed in a timely manner.
- Maintains harmony among workers and resolves grievances.
- Provides input and makes recommendations to management on how to improve internal processes.
- Maintenance of suitable records for matters indirectly and directly relating to housekeeping.
- Performs any other duties related to job functions.

- Must be familiar with the vessel’s layout in terms of safety and security.
- Must have a full understanding of the Ships Rules and Regulations (SMS) and participate in all required safety drills/training.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel).
- Able to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities as a Chief Steward.
Qualifications, Experience and Training
- Basic Safety.
- Crowd and Crisis Management Certification.
- Security Awareness Training.
- Seaman’s Book.
- Valid Approved Seafarers Medical.
- Previous supervisory experience preferred.
- Two (2) years previous experience in a related position.
