POSITION DESCRIPTION
General Accountability
The Accountant is responsible for managing all the accounting functions of the Credit Union. The position will ensure that a proper accounting system and relevant policies and procedures are implemented and maintained and that all financial transactions are properly recorded so that accurate financial information is provided to the Management and Board. In addition, the Accountant will also operate as Team Lead to a small staff.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Ø Supervise the accounting function and ensure that adequate systems are in place for the smooth functioning of the Credit Union and Consumer Co-operative.
Ø Prepare monthly reports for Income Statements, Balance Sheets and Cash Flow Statement for the Credit Union and Consumer Co-operative.
Ø Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of Bank Reconciliations.
Ø In conjunction with the Manager prepare the annual Capital and Recurrent Expenditure Budget.
Ø Ensure on a monthly basis all negative variances between actual and budgeted figures are analyzed and explanation provided for same.
Ø Verify and approve all accounting related data that are entered in the computer system
Ø Provide monthly updates on the performance of the Credit Union and Consumer Co-operative.
Ø Ensure that shares, loans, deposits and all other accounts are reconciled monthly, reviewed and signed off.
Ø Ensure that payments to suppliers are made in a timely manner.
Ø Ensure that a fixed asset register is maintained, it is updated monthly with all fixed assets purchased and disposed of and it provides an accurate monthly depreciation figure.
Ø Participate in special projects and initiatives.
Ø Manage Inventory and Procurement.
Ø Ensure that operating procedures and controls are adhered to.
Ø Provide training for relevant staff in the use of the accounting system.
Ø Appraise, guide and discipline subordinate staff.
Ø Provide support to the Manager in carrying out his/her function.
Person Specifications
Minimum Acceptable Academic/Technical/Professional Qualifications
B.Sc. Accounting or ACCA Level III or an equivalent combination of training and experience. ACCA Level II with appropriate experience will also be considered.
Minimum Number of Years of Relevant Experience
At least five (5) years’ experiences at a supervisory level in an accounting environment, preferably in the financial services sector.
Specific Skills/Experience and/or Knowledge
Ø Knowledge of international financial reporting standards
Ø Proficiency in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite
Ø Knowledge of the Credit Union Industry preferred
Ø Demonstrated problem solving, analytical, project management, and organizational skills are required
Ø Well-developed communication skills.
