CAREER OPPORTUNITY
RESEARCH OFFICER – NUTRIENT CHEMIST
The Job
The successful candidate will be required to function as a nutrient chemist in the Institute’s Environmental Quality Research Programme and to conduct research related to the environment. The incumbent will also be required to provide support to IMA’s RAC related activities. The incumbent reports to the Principal Research Officer, Environmental Quality.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Formulate, plan and execute environmental quality research projects.
- Prepare proposals to attract funding from local and international sources.
- Perform field data collection and data analysis inclusive of numerical modelling.
- Supervise and train technicians in the collection and analyses of nutrient data.
- Produce publications and technical reports based on the research conducted.
- Present scientific research at international and local symposia.
- Represent the Institute on external committees relevant to area of expertise.
- Review documents/policies and provide technical advice to government and regional agencies.
- Network with other research institutions/universities.
- Disseminate scientific information to a general audience via newspaper articles, lectures and community talks.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience:
- MPhil/PhD in Chemistry/Analytical Chemistry with specialisation in the analysis of nutrients (eg. ammonia, nitrite, nitrates, etc)
- Working experience in Flow Injection Analysis and in using Chromatographic Analytical Instrumentation
- Ability to conduct field sampling in response to environmental incidents
- Ability to analyse and interpret environmental data.
- Proficient in word processing, spreadsheets/databases, statistics. Knowledge of R programming would be an asset.
- Ability to work independently and as part of multi-disciplinary teams in order to meet objectives within a defined period.
- Publications in primary journals on research related to environmental quality (nutrients).
- Effective oral, written and general communication skills.
