Habana Compas Dance Company, a percussion dance company, is recognized internationally for combining dance and various percussive instruments. The group was founded in 2004, under the general direction of the dancer and choreographer Liliet Rivera who developed a new artistic line where the essence of Spanish dance was merged with Afro-Cuban rhythms. Percussionist and plastic artist Eduardo Cordova, who is responsible for the musical direction, taught all the dancers the art of percussion. The union of both directors allowed the rebirth of the company, creating a unique style that identifies them: the masterful execution of dissimilar percussion instruments cleverly mixed with contemporary dance movements and recognized Cuban rhythms.

The visiting company consists of 20 musicians and dancers. Using bata drums, congas, drumsticks, castanets, chac chac, heels, sandals, stools and percussive chairs mostly made by Master Eduardo Cordova, makes this dance company one of the best performing acts in Cuba. Habana Compas Dance will be performing two full concerts: Friday January 18, 7 PM at Lord Kitchener Auditorium, NAPA, Port-of-Spain and Sunday January 20, 6 PM at SAPA, San Fernando.

In addition to the concerts, there will be free dance /percussion workshops for performing arts students of secondary schools, UWI, UTT as well as members of local dance companies. One of the major workshops will target our local performing artistes and will focus on a comparison of the Flamenco, Tap and the East Indian Kathak classical dance. This will be held on Monday January 14, 6 PM at the Central Indoor Sport Complex, Chaguanas. Dr Sat Balkaransingh, an internationally recognized Kathak dancer, will present the Kathak aspect.

A significant event of this exchange project will be the ā€œArts: Education for Lifeā€ forum on Tuesday Jan 15, 9AM- 3PM at Theatre 1, UTT /NAPA. This event is a free public forum designed to target persons involved in developing, administrating and receiving arts education plus the wider community persons who are interested in using the arts for educational development. A component of this forum will focus on advancing the business and career opportunities to be derived from education in the visual and performing arts.

Last year 2017, El Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba, a 36-member folkloric group visited both Trinidad and Tobago. Over 100 students from 13 secondary schools across Trinidad participated in and benefited from the workshops. Also, about 40 UWI and 80 UTT Performing Arts students attended interactive workshops. Additionally, over 60 students from Tobago participated in the workshop held at Shaw Park Complex. These workshops were followed by excellent performances at Naparima Bowl, Queenā€™s Hall and Shaw Park Complex that left local audiences awe-struck.
