Crochet art relaxes me – Ms Joyce

I learned the art of crochet at the age of five by a lady named Mrs Howard in Curepe. It was very important for a girl child to have a skill in the home says Joyce James-Pitman well known as Ms Joyce.

I crochet and knit for myself, family and friends

I bought my own tutorial and design books as I grew older and while I improved my crocheting I learned to knit on my own. I used one needle with a hook to crochet and two needles to knit. I have been crocheting and knitting several items ever since up to this present day.

My work was never for sale. I made many things for myself, my family and my friends. I knitted and crocheted blouses, dresses, baby booties, table cloths, cushion covers, mats, doilies, moth balls, toilet paper covers, teddy bears and doll dresses.

I focus on crochet and positive news

People would compliment my work and say, “Gosh Joyce, you have to make one of that for me.” Long ago, I would have made it and give it as a Christmas gift but not now. I only do it to feel relaxed and forget about everything that is out there.

I try to think positive and not follow too much bad news to take it on. I ask the Lord to keep my loved ones safe as much as possible and focus on the things that I can help. We have two choices in life, be sad or happy, and my choice is to be happy.

Feeling safe and free in Trinidad

I love my country. When I travel abroad, my thoughts are always on when I am going back to Trinidad. When I am on my way back on a plane and I see mountains, I make the sign of the cross and say thank God I am back, and that is the truth.

I tell everybody that I cannot live outside of Trinidad. I was born here, the Lord put me here, I feel safer and more free than when I am anywhere else. When people come to my door I don’t have to peep through a hole to see them. Also, when I am out there, I have to wait for someone to take me around, but here I can easily flag down a taxi, a maxi-taxi or I can use the free bus service that the Government has provided for me. I would live here until I die.

Young people must improve their country

I say that young people in T&T should go out there, see the world, learn new things and come back and put it to good use to improve their country. Although life may be filled with contradictions, people must not dwell on the negatives in their lives. We cannot stop that. We can only go forward if we stop living in the past and just live in the now. It is best to keep a good relationship with everyone around.
