      Engineer In Training – Process Safety – Mechanical

      The Engineer In Training – Process Safety Mechanical is a two (2) year contract position for a Mechanical Engineer with 1-3 years mechanical engineering experience with a special emphasis in Process Safety.

      The Engineer In Training – Process Safety- Mechanical position is two (2) year Contract. This position will report to both the Manager, Production and Manager, Maintenance and Reliability based on assignment.


      What you will do:

      • Evaluate the performance of mechanical equipment and systems and recommends operating changes or equipment modifications to improve Plant Safety, Reliability and Efficiency or to prolong equipment life
      • Participate in the design, selection and specification of new mechanical equipment or systems
      • Coordinate maintenance type work during periods of increased plant activities such as Plant shutdowns or turnarounds
      • Support site implementation of PSM Mechanical Integrity standards and best practices
      • Contribute to project planning and execution, to ensure mechanical considerations have been appropriately included
      • Lead, support, and facilitate Root Cause Analyses (RCAs), and Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs)
      • Coordinate activities involving inspection, maintenance, and repairs to optimize utilization and improve reliability of mechanical equipment and systems
      • Participate in the review of prepared engineering drawings
      • Monitor the performance of contractors to ensure acceptable execution of work being done
      • Lead equipment troubleshooting activities and monitoring of plant equipment
      • Manage project work including scope definition, tender document creation, contract specification and ongoing supervision of contracts
      • Provide engineering support to capital project development and design
      • Participate as required as a technical resource for plant projects and completes level appropriate engineering studies and calculations
      • Assist with the coordination of the Process Safety Management Program at the site
      • Compile process safety information (PSI) on plant equipment and processes, and assists with the maintenance of PSI
      • Support the development of processes geared towards improving PSM performance
      • Facilitate the tracking of PSM corrective action and ensures the implementation and close out
      • Contribute to the training of employees in the PSM standards, and methodologies
      • Champion PSM compliance during Plant Turnaround planning and execution

      What you will bring:

      • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized University
      • 1-3 years in the petrochemical or oil/gas industry
      • Experience in Process Safety will be an asset
      • Project Management Certification will be an asset
      • General knowledge of ammonia/urea processes
      • Ability of perform engineering calculations
      • Basic knowledge of Project Management
      • Knowledge of SHE policies, procedures and MOC requirements
      • Written communication skills including technical report writing
      • Strong analytical skills
      • Strong and proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
      • Experience in Layer of Protection Analysis, Machinery Failure Mode Analysis, Root Cause Analysis, Hazard Analysis Techniques

      The Engineer In Training – Chemical position is a two (2) year Contract. This position will report to the Manager, Production.


      What you will do:

      • Develops working knowledge of assigned plants and their support equipment as well as general knowledge of the other plants and site interdependencies
      • Monitors plant and equipment performance daily with the aim of identifying opportunities for optimization and improvement
      • Actively seeks out and develops opportunities for improved efficiency, lower cost of production, improved reliability and increased plant production
      • Develops and proposes opportunities for improved sustainability including those targeted at GHG savings and reduced water usage
      • Takes a leading role in process safety management activities on the site
      • Works with Operations, Reliability and SHE departments to optimize plant production, energy usage and improve overall plant reliability
      • Provides process-engineering support for plant shutdowns/turnarounds. This involves the co-ordination of catalyst unloading and loading, exchanger chemical cleaning, vessel inspections and supervision of capital projects
      • Supports the plant’s safety and environmental programs. Performs exposure-based observations and key procedure audits (KPAs) on a regular basis. Participates in process hazard analysis (PHA) and incident investigation/root cause analysis
      • Identifies process related plant problems and works with other departments and engineering firms to develop solutions for improved plant performance
      • Utilizes HYSYS/ASPEN simulation software to model and evaluate equipment, systems and plant performance
      • Evaluates catalyst performance, updates the catalyst changeout history and assists in the preparation of the catalyst budget
      • Performs efficiency evaluations of major plant equipment including compressors, pumps, heat exchangers and fired heaters
      • Evaluates steam system, cooling water system and carbon dioxide removal system
      • Plans catalyst changeout jobs. This involves arranging the supply of catalyst, catalyst contractors, nitrogen and nitrogen pumping contractors and developing catalyst unloading, loading and activation procedures
      • Monitors the chemical treatment program for the steam and cooling water systems and works with the chemical treatment contractor to ensure optimization of the treatment program
      • Performs process-engineering calculations including material and energy balances as well as vessel and line sizing calculations

      What you will bring:

      • BSc. in Chemical/Process Engineering from a recognized University
      • 2-3 years in the petrochemical or oil/gas industry
      • Experience in Process Safety will be an asset
      • Project Management Certification will be an asset
      • General knowledge of ammonia/urea processes
      • General knowledge of plant equipment, systems and catalysts
      • Ability of perform process engineering calculations
      • Basic knowledge of Project Management
      • Knowledge of SHE policies, procedures and MOC requirements
      • Working knowledge of process safety

      What you will do:

      • Work with the Reliability Team to evaluate the performance of mechanical equipment and systems and review the recommendations to mechanical changes or equipment modifications to improve Plant Safety, Reliability and Efficiency or to prolong equipment life
      • Assists in the design, selection and specification of new mechanical equipment or systems
      • Assists in Maintenance type work during periods of increased plant activities such as Plant shut downs or Plant Turn-a-rounds
      • Assists in development of new projects and assist in the planning and execution in order to ensure adequate emphasis on mechanical requirements and cost control
      • Assists in coordinating activities involving inspection, maintenance, and repairs to optimize utilization and improve reliability of mechanical equipment and systems
      • Estimation and application for CAPEX and MRM Projects pertaining to specific plant assignments
      • Assists in the review of prepared engineering drawings and submits comments and recommendations in order to ensure effective final design of modified or new Plant equipment and facilities
      • Monitors the performance of contractors to ensure acceptable execution of work being done
      • Monitors and gather data on plant equipment
      • Project work encompassing scope definition, tender document creation and ongoing management of contracts
      • Organizes technical records such as equipment files, drawings, and engineering data
      • Assists technical supervisors with equipment troubleshooting
      • Participates as required as a Technical resource for the plant projects
      • Provides engineering support to maintenance projects
      • Completes level appropriate engineering studies, calculations, and/or modeling and simulation of plant processes
      • Writes proper contract specification for various types of jobs
      • Submits monthly reports on a timely basis
      • Works closely with individuals from other departments with a view at always building better relations for the general improvement of interpersonal development
      • Any other such duties that may be required to be done from time to time to ensure a smooth running of the department and the company as a whole

      What you will bring:

      • In Mechanical Engineering from a recognized University
      • 1-3 years experience in the petrochemical or Oil/Gas industry
      • Project Management Certification will be an asset
      • General knowledge of ammonia/urea processes
      • General knowledge of plant equipment, systems and catalysts
      • Ability of perform engineering calculations
      • Basic knowledge of Project Management
      • Knowledge of SHE policies, procedures and MOC requirements
      • Written communication skills including technical report writing
      • Intermediate Drawing Software Proficiency
      • Strong analytical skills
      • Must have strong and proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
