FLOORHANDS: – must have a minimum of 1 yr Experience Offshore preferably on a Semi Sub.

CRANE OPERATOR/ASST: – Minimum Experience of 2 yrs Offshore preferably on Semi Sub. Stage 2/3
certification is preferred.

ROUSTABOUT: – must have rigging and banksman certification with 1 yr Offshore heavy lifting operation
experience.

RIG WELDER: – must have 1 yr Offshore rigging experience with ABS Certification and Trade Certification.

MATERIAL COORDINATOR: Familiar with IFS

The Universal Baseline: BOSIET and STCW

Regardless of your job title—whether you are the Chief Cook or a Subsea Engineer—there are foundational safety standards that apply to every individual on a rig or vessel.

BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training)

This is the absolute minimum requirement for anyone travelling to an offshore installation by helicopter. The training is intensive and designed to ensure you can survive a crisis at sea. It typically includes:

HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training): Learning how to escape a submerged, overturned helicopter.
Sea Survival: Deploying life rafts and using immersion suits.
Firefighting: Basic response to onboard fires.
First Aid: Initial casualty management.

STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping)

For those working on vessels (like DP Operators or 3rd Mates) rather than fixed platforms, STCW is the global maritime standard. It ensures that seafarers have a consistent level of competence across international waters.

Department-Specific Requirements

Beyond the safety baseline, each department has its own “gold standard” for professional certification.

1. Drilling and Subsea Operations

Roles like the Driller, Subsea Engineer, and Drilling Fluid Operator are at the heart of the rig’s function.

Well Control Certification (IWCF or IADC): This is mandatory for anyone in a supervisory drilling role. It focuses on maintaining pressure and preventing blowouts.
Subsea Training: Subsea Engineers must often hold specialized diplomas or certificates in subsea production systems and ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) operations.

2. Technical and Maintenance

For the Rig Electrician, Electronic Technician, and Rig Welder, trade-specific mastery is combined with offshore awareness.

NACE (National Association of Corrosion Engineers) Certification: As you noted for Paint Foremen, NACE (now part of AMPP) is the world leader in corrosion control. On an offshore rig, salt-water corrosion is the enemy, and NACE-certified professionals are essential for maintaining structural integrity.
CompEx: Electricians often need this certification to work in “explosive atmospheres” where gas leaks could pose a ignition risk.

3. Marine and Engine Room

The QMED (Qualified Member of the Engine Department) III/4 and AB Seafarer roles are critical for the propulsion and mechanical life of the vessel.

Engine Room Rating: These certifications prove that the mariner has the necessary sea-time and technical knowledge to assist licensed engineers in maintenance and watchkeeping.

In 2026, many operators also require additional respiratory health checks for those using Compressed Air Emergency Breathing Systems (CA-EBS).
