Beauty treatment myths vs facts: 11 skin and hair tips you’ve heard about

What if we told you not to believe everything you hear about beauty? Whether you’re watching TikTok or still believe in an old wives’ tale about skincare, not everything you hear about a beauty treatment for your skin and hair is true.

Additionally, what works for your friend may not work for you. Everyone is different, and how we care for our beauty varies depending on skin type and texture, hair texture, and overall needs. The beauty industry has a lot of advice for you, but is all of it true? Here are some debunked beauty treatment myths.

Beauty treatment myths vs facts

You should comb your hair wet

Your hair follicles are weak when they’re wet, which is why you may notice more hair loss in the shower as you shampoo and condition. While some hair loss is normal when brushing your hair, combing your hair wet can lead to hair breakage and loss because your hair is so weak when wet.

Instead, you should wait until your hair is dry to brush it. If you have lots of tangles from wearing your hair up, you can brush your hair out before getting in the shower.

However, this rule doesn’t necessarily apply to all hair types. For example, if you have curly or coarse hair, detangling your hair while it is wet and being conditioned is recommended.

You can shrink pores

Contrary to popular belief, pores can’t shrink. The size of your pores won’t change no matter how often you wash your face or the temperature you use on your skin.

Pores can look larger and smaller depending on various factors, such as temperature. For example, your pores may look larger in humid weather or after a workout. However, any effect on your pores is temporary; their size never actually changes.

That said, a good beauty treatment is you can make your pores appear smaller by ensuring they’re not clogged. Clogged pores look larger, even though they’re not. Therefore, properly caring for your skin can make your pores look smaller.

Oily skin doesn’t need moisture

If you have oily skin, you might avoid putting moisturiser on your face for fear of an acne breakout. However, oily skin requires just as much moisture as other skin types.

One of the potential reasons why someone may have oily skin is because their skin has been stripped of its moisture barrier due to harsh acne products, causing the skin to overcompensate and create more sebum. However, moisturisng your face is a beauty treatment that can make your skin less oily because it can train your skin how to react.

Natural is better

Some natural makeup products are better for your skin and the environment. However, they can still irritate, so natural ingredients aren’t necessarily better.

Since essential oils often replace other formulas, they can trigger reactions on sensitive skin. Of course, this isn’t necessarily the case for everyone, but it’s essential to choose your skincare products based on the ingredients, which may take some trial and error depending on your skin.

Everyone needs eye cream

Many companies promote eye creams as a solution to crows’ feet, puffiness, bags, and dark circles. However, as long as you’re using a good facial moisturiser, there’s no need to spend the extra money on eye cream separately.

The skin around your eyes is delicate because it’s thinner, but a good moisturiser won’t irritate it since it’s the same skin as the rest of your face. Any facial moisturiser can be used around your eyes as long as it doesn’t contain harsh ingredients.

You need to exfoliate daily

We can all agree that exfoliating is good for your skin. This beauty treatment can help slough off dead skin and reveal smoother, healthier skin underneath.

However, exfoliating every day isn’t necessary, and it can even be detrimental to the skin. Instead, you should only exfoliate a few times a week, but pay careful attention to your skin. If you notice your skin becoming irritated, try to exfoliate less often.

Additionally, an important beauty treatment is you should always moisturise after exfoliating to give healthy skin the hydration it needs.

You need a night cream

Many people believe they need a night cream because those moisturisers help your skin repair while you sleep. However, your skin is constantly repairing itself regardless of the time of day. Night moisturisers are typically similar to your daytime moisturiser.

However, since you’re not going out and don’t need to rush out the door before bed, they often contain thicker, greasier ingredients. Meanwhile, daytime moisturisers absorb quickly, allowing you to leave the house without looking oily.

How you apply moisturiser can prevent sagging

We’ve been told that applying face cream in a specific upward motion and massaging around the jawline is a beauty treatment that will prevent sagging. However, that’s not true.

Facial exercises can cause premature sagging. This is because the more your skin moves, the more it’s stretched. However, the most common causes of sagging are aging, gravity, and genetics, so there’s not much you can do to prevent sagging.

Don’t pop pimples

People have told you never to pop pimples. However, if your pimple is ready to pop, popping it can help reduce its size and allow it to heal faster. That said, you should learn how to pop a pimple the right way. Popping a pimple incorrectly can lead to a wound or scar.

However, popping a pimple the right way is a beauty treatment that will allow it to heal without a mark. Knowing when to pop a pimple is crucial. You shouldn’t dig at the pimple.

Instead, you can use two fingers to push on it and release any of the contents inside. If nothing comes out, your pimple isn’t ready to be popped. Instead, it’ll be ready if you see a whitehead on the surface.

You can correct dark circles

Many people get dark circles around their eyes when tired. Getting enough rest can reduce these dark circles and their appearance.

However, some people inherit dark circles, which can’t be corrected, regardless of what moisturisers claim to do. Dark circles are often a family trait, so eye cream won’t help you. However, a beauty treatment, like laser therapy, can correct this issue.

Don’t believe everything you hear

Hopefully, debunking some beauty myths will make you think twice about your skin and hair care. Before trying something you heard about from a friend, consider your skin type and whether your skincare routine already works. If you’re having skin issues, experimenting with new products can help you find the right routine, or consider consulting a dermatologist to address major issues like eczema or acne.
