5 things to keep in mind about Mount Everest
1. Routes and ideal time for climbing Mount Everest
If not researched well beforehand, the journey of climbing the summit may also turn into a fatal one. Therefore, choosing the correct route as per the person’s physical and mental capability is vital. There are many routes to climb the mountain, but most mountaineers prefer the Nepal route (southern) or the Tibet route (northern).
The southern route is a direct and steeper one, while the northern one is easy at the initial level, but both of the two routes are filled with respective difficulties. The best time to pick up the climb is when there is no rainfall, making the journey harder. The month of May is thus perfect for mountaineering, as the weather remains clear and rainfall-free.
2. The itinerary for Mount Everest summit
The journey will be a long one, and it can continue for at least two long months (if the southern route is chosen) and even more in some cases.
While the southern route requires two months (and some additional days for the final ascent), the northern one requires around 50 days (excluding some extra days for the last ascending).
So, your itinerary may look something like this:
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu
Day 2: Sightseeing in Kathmandu
Day 3: Go shopping and get ready for your trip
Day 4: The fourth day begins with an official briefing at the Ministry of Tourism
Day 5: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla, then trek to Phakding (2640m)
Day 6: Phakding to Namche Bazaar, Day 6 (3446m)
Day 7: Rest in Namche Bazaar
Day 8: Tengboche to Namche Bazaar (3800m)
Day 9: Tengboche to Pheriche (4243m)
Day 10: Pheriche to Lobuche (4930m)
Day 11: Everest Base Camp (5360m) – Accommodation in a tent
Day 12-60: Mount Everest Climbing Period (8848m)
Day 61: Pheriche to Everest Base Camp
Day 62: Pheriche to Namche Bazaar
Day 63: Lukla to Namche Bazaar
Day 64: Lukla to Kathmandu
Day 65: Rest in Kathmandu
Day 66: Final Departure

3. What’s the Cost of Climbing Mount Everest?
For an estimate, in 2017, the average amount paid was roughly $45,000. A regular sponsored climb can cost anywhere from $28,000 to $85,000, and a fully customized climb will set you well over $115,000, while extreme risk-takers can get away with less than $20,000. Transportation from Kathmandu or Lhasa, food, base camp tents, Sherpa support, and supplementary oxygen are usually all included in this one cost of climbing Mount Everest.
However, there are several constraints with such a broad range, including the need for a personal Sherpa, western expedition expert guides, tips, food, and tents as you move closer towards the peak.
4. What’s the expected equipment cost of climbing Everest?
So, if you want to attempt to climb to the top of the world’s tallest peak, you’ll need to budget between $6,000 and $8,000, depending on the quality of your suit, sleeping bags, boots, and other gear. Print your gear list from Madison Mountaineering.
The total cost of climbing Mount Everest will be expensive if you are planning this trip with your life savings. 5. Gather enough experience!
Even if you are a pro at climbing, it takes at least one to two years to prepare yourself physically and mentally for Everest. Climbing steep, rocky mountains and peaks through challenging routes, melting glaciers, and slippery terrain with more than 6,500 altitudes, it becomes a necessity for one to gain good experience summiting smaller peaks and treks.
The bottom line
The excitement of climbing Mount Everest is the real deal for many mountain climbers, but do not let excitement take over your safety. Always follow your sherpas and team members. Get your life insurance done before the expedition.
Eat more food, stay hydrated and stay happy. Pack your bags with the necessary clothing, permits, documents, and equipment. Finally, reach the summit and cherish your dream of a lifetime by standing at the top of the world.
