Wiring: 5 tips to set up your office at home

Many people prefer to work from home rather than at conventional offices in the modern-day. The office at home should mimic the one at work to reduce distractions and make you more productive. You need to use quality wires and ensure that the wiring meets the requirements of your equipment.

There are many wiring layouts you can choose from when wiring, such as the star layout. You have to consider many factors when wiring the office to ensure it meets your power demands. The wiring plan should also consider the office arrangements and the type of equipment that you have. In this article, we give you 5 wiring tips to help you set up your home office.

1. Think of the safety of appliances

When you are doing your office wiring, think about the safety of your electric equipment. You should use the correct type of wire that allows enough current to support your equipment to flow through. Ideally, you should consider the 10/3 wire if your appliances require a lot of power. Also, protect the appliances from an electrical surge and system overload. The best way to do this is to set up safety switches and surge protectors into the wiring system. Never rely on surge protector power strips as most are not surge protectors but surge suppressors.

These surge suppressors are not efficient in protecting your equipment from an electrical surge. Using external surge protectors also poses a risk to your computers and other appliances. The best thing you can do is to incorporate surge protectors into the panel box or get a surge protector box made for computers.

It is advisable to get a wiring expert to do the wiring for you.

2. Consider having many electrical outlets

A typical office, whether it is at home or elsewhere, has many electric appliances. They include printers, computers, fax machines, monitors, lamps, tablets, and phones. You should power the devices constantly for work efficiency. Therefore, you need these outlets easily accessible to office users.

To ensure there is no interference, you need to have many electrical outlets in the office. You can also get power strips to increase the number of outlets.

When making the wiring plans and positions of the outlets, consider possible changes that you might make in the office plan. Changes in the organisation and sitting plans in the office are essential when you add more staff. Set up the outlets in various places in the room to increase the flexibility of moving furniture and equipment.

Another advantage of having many power outlets is that it prevents you from inserting many appliances into one outlet, which causes system overload. Get grounded outlets of high quality placed at different places.

3. Remember the heating system

Too hot or too cold environments are not conducive for working. When you work under unsuitable conditions, you reduce your efficacy. Consider including a separate heating system for your home office. You can use this method to save energy by heating the room you are using at a time.

A heating system will enable you to regulate the office temperature to your liking when the weather is cold or hot.

4. Remember the internet connection

Fast internet speed is a basic necessity today. Whether you work from home or anywhere else, you will need high internet speed to do online work, send documents, download them, make calls over the internet, and so on.

It is more advisable to get a hard-wired internet connection than using Wi-Fi. Weather elements and environmental factors do not affect Ethernet connections. Therefore, it is more reliable than Wi-Fi. They are also safe from hackers because they cannot connect to your network without a hardware cable. Therefore, when planning the wiring, incorporate the internet wiring into your plan.

5. Consider improving the lighting system

You need an excellent source of light to work well in any office setup. Proper lighting reduces headaches and eye fatigue. You will need a lighting source that provides sufficient and bright light that is friendly to the eye.

Consider using LED lights as they are bright but also use less energy than the incandescent bulbs. The bulbs should be at a strategic place so that the entire office gets enough light.

What you should do when wiring

1. Use a 3-prong outlet as it has a ground terminal.

2. Upgrade the old circuit and panel box before adding wiring sites.

3. Plug appliances with heavy power consumption into outlets that produce sufficient power to support them.

4. Hire a qualified electrician to do the wiring.

Consult a professional electrician

When well set, home offices provide a sustainable working site. To ensure the wiring system meets all your power needs and protects your equipment from electrical faults, consult a professional electrician to help you with wiring. You should also use the correct type of wiring for every section. Remember to include your lighting and a heating system to match your needs. Also, consider the number of equipment and possible change of office plans in the future when setting up the system.
