Calculate daily solar panel output

Multiply your solar panel capacity (kW) by the average daily sunlight hours to get the daily electricity generation from your solar panels.

For example, if you have 4 kW of solar panels and receive 5 hours of direct sunlight, you generate 4 kW * 5 hours = 20 kWh of electricity each day.

Calculate battery capacity needed

Subtract your solar panel’s daily electricity generation from your daily consumption. This gives you the amount of energy you need to store in batteries. For example, if you consume 23 kWh per day and your solar panels generate 20 kWh, you need to store 23 kWh – 20 kWh = 3 kWh each day.

For example, if you need to store 3 kWh and each battery has a capacity of 2.4 kWh, you would need at least 3 kWh / 2.4 kWh/battery ≈ 1.25 batteries. Since you can’t have a fraction of a battery, you would round up to at least 2 batteries.

Since you mentioned that each battery is 12 volts and you need to store 23 kWh per day, you need to convert the daily electricity consumption to watt-hours (Wh) and ensure the battery capacity is also in Wh.

23 kWh = 23,000 Wh

Now, divide the daily electricity consumption by the battery capacity:

Number of batteries = 23,000 Wh / (battery capacity in Wh)

For example, if you have batteries with a capacity of 200 ampere-hours (Ah) at 12 volts, you need to convert this to Wh:

Battery capacity = 200 Ah * 12 V = 2,400 Wh

Now, plug these values into the formula:

Number of batteries = 23,000 Wh / 2,400 Wh = 9.58
