In 2014, my husband and I endured our most difficult trial to date. In quick succession, we lost three babies to miscarriage, identical twins and a single baby, all within a six-month period. That same year, I became pregnant again with my daughter who was born in 2015. Then in 2016, I gave birth to my son. If your head is spinning, I understand. It was a whirlwind for us, too.

Difficult journey into parenthood

We were only married for a short time before we began our difficult journey into parenthood. The period of grief was significant for us because before we could come to terms with our first loss, we were dealing with our second. Life hit us hard and we were reeling from the fall out. Then, as we were considering the possibility of never being able to have biological children, we became parents to two rainbow babies.

Rainbow babies a blessing to us

Our rainbow babies (or babies born after a miscarriage) are incredible blessings to us. They are living, breathing symbols of God’s mercy towards me and my family. I longed for a way to articulate our experience and I knew that I wanted to share our story with my children. However, I was very wary of placing any burden on them to be our ‘replacement babies’.

The idea for this beautiful book

In those first precious moments as I held my newborn daughter, the idea came for Happy Tears and Rainbow Babies. It was only after my son was born that I was able to put to words the first draft. Happy Tears and Rainbow Babies tells our story of how faith and hope brought healing to our family. It is our story but it is one to which many families can relate. Parents of rainbow babies everywhere can share this beautiful book with their children and engage in conversations about the enduring love between parents and their children.
