How junk fees secretly invaded everyday life

It seems like every day there is a new fee, surcharge or tax. To add insult to injury, the additional cost adds absolutely no value to the product or service. There is an actual name for these fees, they are referred to as junk fees.

Initially, the domain of the financial services sector, they have gradually invaded almost all aspects of everyday life including non financial institutions.

What are junk fees in non financial institutions?

Junk fees in non financial institutions are extra charges or fees that are imposed on consumers for services that are not directly related to the cost of providing the service.

Some examples of common junk fees in non financial institutions include baggage fees, early termination fees, upgrade fees and activation fees.

It may seem like companies are trying their best to increase profit margins via extortion of their customer base. An example of this would be banks charging a transaction fee at ATMs, either per transaction or monthly.

The catch with the monthly subscription is that you are required to pay once you possess an ATM card, even if you do not use it during the month. With this in mind, you decide to ditch the card and proceed to conduct only over-the-counter transactions, then to be told that there is an even higher transaction fee for speaking to a real person.

Almost every single industry is getting on board with charging junk fees, from internet service providers charging for in-store payments to car manufacturers toying with the idea of a subscription service for the privilege of you using the key fob to the car that you bought.

Like junk fees in the financial industry, these fees can add up quickly and significantly increase the total cost of buying a product or using a service. They can also be confusing and overwhelming for consumers, who may not understand what they are paying for and why.

Why are junk fees a problem?

Junk fees are a problem for several reasons. First, they can significantly increase the cost of using a product or service. For example, a consumer may purchase a low-priced airline ticket, only to find out later that they will need to pay extra for baggage, priority boarding, and other services that were not included in the initial price.

This can be frustrating and can make it difficult for consumers to accurately compare prices between different service providers.

Second, junk fees in non financial institutions can be confusing and overwhelming for consumers. With so many different fees and charges, it can be difficult to understand what is legitimate and what is not. This can lead to frustration and mistrust in the service provider.

Finally, junk fees can disproportionately affect low-income consumers. These customers may already be struggling to make ends meet and may not have the financial resources to pay for unnecessary fees and charges.

What can be done to address junk fees?

There are several steps that can be taken to address the problem of junk fees. These include:

Increased transparency and disclosure

One of the most important steps in addressing junk fees is increased transparency and disclosure. Service providers and retailers should be required to clearly disclose all fees and charges associated with a product or service. This would allow consumers to make informed decisions and accurately compare prices.

Regulation and oversight

Regulators and oversight agencies can play an important role in addressing junk fees. They can require service providers and retailers to disclose all fees and charges, prohibit certain types of fees, and monitor compliance with these requirements.

Consumer education

Consumer education is also an important tool in addressing junk fees. Consumers should be educated about the different types of fees and charges they may encounter when using a service. They should also be encouraged to ask questions and seek clarification if they are unsure about any fees or charges.

Increased competition

Increased competition among service providers and retailers can also help address the problem of junk fees. When consumers have more options, service providers and retailers may be less likely to charge unnecessary fees and charges in order to remain competitive.

To address this problem, increased transparency and disclosure, regulation and oversight, consumer education, and increased competition are all important tools that can be utilised. By working together, manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, service providers, regulators and consumers can help create a fairer and more transparent service environment for everyone.
