Everyone cares about personal and home safety against burglars. These unscrupulous people come into your home whether it is day time or night time with malicious intentions. They come to steal your valuable belongings and possibly harm you and your family while doing so.

Ensure that your property is always secured

When you perform duties around your house such as cleaning, washing or gardening, be very careful. If you are working at the back of the house, ensure that your doors and windows to the front are locked and secured.

Likewise, when you move to the front or side, make sure that the areas out of your line of sight are locked and secured. You don’t want someone to gain access to your property while you are distracted on the other side of the house.

Dispose of the packaging of expensive items

If you have purchased high-end items to use in the house like a new smart TV or phone and you place the box or packaging for them at the front of your house, then you are basically advertising what you have inside.

Tear up boxes and packaging and place them into black garbage bags just before garbage pick-up. For larger items like refrigerators and stoves, call your local municipal corporation. They have large item pick-up services available.

Install remotely monitored CCTV

CCTV cameras act as a deterrent. When burglars see surveillance cameras around your home, they may think twice about entering your compound. Also, when installing CCTV, you are required to post a conspicuous signage that states the compound is being monitored by cameras.

Some burglars however would still enter, rob you of your possessions, and even steal the DVR, which is the evidence of the theft. Therefore, it is important to install a remote system where the footage is being stored on the cloud. This ensures that you will be able to assist the police with locating your items if stolen.

Invest in a VPN

You should invest in a VPN to keep the tech savvy burglars out of your home. Burglars today are becoming very sophisticated, and can use technology to get your personal information. These burglars may resort to hacking your network (LAN) by simply sitting outside of your property in their vehicles and gaining access to your accounts.

They will see your banking information, travel itinerary to see when you are not at home, and if your home has smart TVs, laptops, and game consoles. They can also gain access to your CCTV camera and disable it or delete the footage.

Return home from shopping trips during the daylight hours

If you shop until the stores close and get home at night time, you are putting yourself at risk to be a target for burglars and carjackers. Burglars and carjackers are known to follow persons from the mall to their home at night so they could rob their homes or steal their vehicles. Be mindful of your surroundings and who may be watching.

Also, if you get at home in the day time and notice strange persons lurking outside of your gate, keep on driving. You may stop further down the road to monitor them in your rear view mirror. If they seem to be acting suspiciously around your home or the homes of your neighbours, call the police and give full descriptions of the persons.

Have a prearranged emergency plan

Every household should have a prearranged emergency plan, one that has been tried and tested. All members of the household should know emergency numbers and what appropriate action should be taken for the given emergency. For instance, in the event of a fire, everyone should know which exit has been designated as the house emergency exit.

We all value our home and possessions, as a result, the average house has been equipped with “burglar proofing” (anti-burglar bars) on windows and doors. Ensure that at least one is removable so that if you need to evacuate the house in the event of an emergency, you can do so to avoid tragedy.

On each floor of your home, you should have at least 1 smoke detector and fire extinguisher. For personal emergencies ensure that there is a well-stocked first-aid kit. You never know when you may need it. There should also be a well-stocked emergency kit in the event of some unforeseen natural disaster, such as an earthquake or a hurricane. Make sure to have items such as batteries, flashlights, and enough food to last approximately 24 to 48 hours.

Get a dog

Some people have an irrational fear of dogs, so getting a dog for your home will deter the burglars who fall into this category. Dogs have a keen sense of smell so they will be aware of intruders who are not in plain sight for the CCTV cameras to pick up, like hiding behind a wall or tree.

Certain breeds of dogs are known for being great guardians that are loyal to their owners. Some are Bull Terriers, Retrievers, Labradors, Huskies, German Shepherds and Rottweilers. Most importantly, your dog will still function during a power outage.
