Makayla in the Land of Papa Bois is the first book to launch in a Middle Grade series on folklore written and illustrated by Trinidadian authors Marsha and Christiana Mckie and published by Aajumbee Publishing House.
The mother and daughter came up with the idea while discussing an SEA themed folklore topic. In 2021, they found themselves drafting an idea for a Middle Grade series that would make folklore more attractive to the next generation. During the lockdown, they passed their time researching, completing story drafts, and drawing characters to bring these stories to life.
Makayla meets jumbees and folklore characters
The story is about a young girl named Makayla who receives a mysterious game of jacks from her father, which was once owned by her grandmother who passes away. Makayla and her siblings have a play at the game and are pulled into a vortex.
They embark on a wild adventure as Makayla is responsible for getting them home. They trample through a psychedelic forest, avoid jumbees, talk to folklore characters, and wrestle with a deep feeling that maybe the game was never supposed to be played, and her granny left a secret bigger than all of them.
