Notice of Vacancy for the Office of Occupational Hygienist (Range 56C), Ministry of Health
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements
A minimum of five (5) years experience in an analytical laboratory including experience in a supervisory capacity and training as evidenced by a BSc degree in one of the natural sciences or engineering from a recognised university, supplemented by a MSc degree in Occupational Hygiene from a recognised university and membership of a recognised professional body of Occupational Hygienists or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
Distinguishing Features of Work
Responsible for planning, directing and administering all the activities of the Occupational Hygiene Division. Work involves supervising a staff of professional and technical assistants engaged in taking samples, carrying out surveys and making a wide variety of analyses for the purpose of monitoring the working environment to enforce the Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Act and the proposed Occupational Health and Safety Act. Work is performed with a high degree of independence and initiative but is subject to administrative review through discussion and reports.
SalaryRange 56C: $11,363 – 12,434/12,434/13,263 per month (2013)

Example of Work
- Assists in the general direction of the Occupational Hygiene Unit. Organises, plans and directs all activities in Occupational Hygiene Division.
- Supervises and co-ordinates the work of the Occupational Hygiene Laboratory and Field Staff Sections.
- Plans and controls the work of the laboratory staff assigning the type and character of test and analyses to be conducted.
- Plans and controls the taking of samples in the field and the use determining the sampling of appropriate equipment to be used and location of sampling and samplers.
- Checks and reviews the results of and reviews the results of analyses conducted to determine conformity to applicable laws, standards and regulations.
- Reviews and evaluates the reports of analysis conducted by laboratory staff.
- Reviews and evaluates the reports of surveys and samplings conducted by the field staff.
- Assists other governmental agencies on problems requiring expert advice on Occupational Hygiene.
- Keeps abreast with the latest developments and innovations with improvements in methods and techniques and discusses applicability with staff.
- Maintain liaisons with overseas authorities dealing with laws, standards and regulations affecting Occupational Hygiene.
- Prepares and delivers technical lecturers to other governmental departments and industrial/commercial establishments.
- Maintains a Quality Control Programme in the Occupational Hygiene Division.
- Performs related work as required.
Required knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of Occupational Hygiene.
- Working knowledge of the principles and practices of analytical chemistry.
- Extensive knowledge of the Factories Ordinance.
- Extensive knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 as amended.
- Extensive knowledge of the Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Act.
- Extensive knowledge of the Public Health Ordinance. Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public administration.
- Skills in the use and care of Chemicals laboratory instruments, equipment and materials.
- Skills in the use and care of environmental monitoring equipment.
- Ability to plan, organise and direct the operation of a laboratory.
- Ability to prepare comprehensive and accurate scientific reports.
- Ability to advise and assist other governmental agencies in their occupational hygiene problems.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with overseas authorities dealing with all aspects of Occupational Hygiene.
