Apple slowing down iPhone

Apple apologises for slowing iPhone, offers $29 battery

Every holiday season, the latest iPhone is on the top of a lot of people’s Christmas wish list, and Christmas 2017 was no different. What also happened this holiday season was the damning revelation from Apple no less they have been “throttling” older iPhone models. In other words, if you don’t have the latest iPhone you would notice that your phone’s performance began to slow over time, especially after an update.

Protecting the user and the iPhone

In Apple’s defense, it was also stated that this was done to protect both the user and the device. These very updates that Apple fan boys and girls look forward to are the actual culprits. The updates increase performance, but at the same time put an additional strain on the battery. Apple does not want to be remembered as Samsung has been with the Galaxy Note 7, so to protect the battery Apple and you the user did in fact start “throttling” the phone’s performance.

Apple’s message to iPhone customers

In the past, Apple denied all claims that they were intentionally slowing down older models of the iPhone until this year when they confirmed the claim with a letter on their website late 2017. Read the full letter here: Message to Our Customers about iPhone Batteries and PerformanceĀ  https://www.apple.com/iphone-battery-and-performance/Ā This however, was too little too late for some iPhone users as a wave of lawsuits followed suit.

The simple solutionApple slowing down iPhone

So, is there any way to avoid this? The answer is yes. The solution as it turns out is quite simple, just change your old battery to a new one. Apparently, the throttling only takes effect when and if iOS detects that your battery is old and can’t keep up with the new update. As any iPhone user outside of the United States might know this may void your warranty, but you would get full functionality of your device.

What Apple is doing in 2018

Since Apple’s acknowledgement of the issue they have decided to do the following three things in response to customers who are concerned that older batteries are making their iPhone run slower.

  • Apple is reducing the price of an out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacement by $50 ā€” from $79 to $29 ā€” for anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery needs to be replaced, starting in late January and available worldwide through December 2018. Details will be provided soon on apple.com.
  • Early in 2018, Apple will issue an iOS software update with new features that give users more visibility into the health of their iPhoneā€™s battery so they can see for themselves if its condition is affecting performance.
  • Apple is working on ways to make the user experience even better, including improving performance and avoiding unexpected shutdowns as batteries age.
