āDespite the challenges and difficulties that come your way, try to enjoy life’s experiences. There will be ups and downs, but learning to deal with whatever is in front of you is important.ā JD Morgan, author of The Silent Love, shares insights about his publication.
Becoming our best selves
The Silent Love explores a journey through anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout. Several poems explore each subject in-depth, providing a light and sometimes candid approach to understanding.
My book speaks to those emotions, dreams, and aspirations that motivate us to become our best selves. Throughout the pages, it delves into the complexities of love, exploring its various forms and manifestations.
From the intense passion of romantic love to the unconditional support of familial love, and the transformative power of self-love, the book presents a nuanced and multifaceted view of this universal emotion.
Challenges that accompany love
At the same time, the book sensitively portrays the challenges and struggles that often accompany love, including anxiety, depression, and the fear of rejection or loss. Through the experiences of the characters and their journeys of self-discovery, the book offers hope and inspiration.
Despite the challenges and difficulties that come your way, try to enjoy life’s experiences. There will be ups and downs, but learning to deal with whatever is in front of you is important. It may take time, but at the end of the day, it’s best to take one step at a time and keep moving forward.
Communicating my thoughts and emotions
The inspiration behind The Silent Love comes from a physical injury I endured. I was going through a tough time, dealing with my struggles while observing friends and colleagues successfully and confidently pursuing their dreams. It felt like I was stuck in a rut, unable to express myself effectively.
As someone who is not very vocal, I found myself searching for an avenue to communicate my thoughts and emotions. That’s when the idea of writing poetry ā a powerful yet subtle way to express my creativity and share my experiences with the world was born.
My collection of poems were written with spare imagery; slant rhyme and internal rhyme; and a pleasing meter. These verses communicate a great deal using only a handful of purposefully selected words. The effect is one of restraint and grace, which is likely enhanced by the thread of imagery of the natural world woven throughout the book.
Coming out of my shell
I go by the pseudonym JD Morgan. When I was in the tenth grade, one of my English literature teachers gave me the nickname “shell boy”.
Despite being quiet, humble, and introverted, I did not take offence to this moniker. I saw it as a term of endearment and appreciated how my teacher helped me participate in class discussions and come out of my shell.
From IT and accounting to gym and hiking
Apart from being a poet, I also work as an information technology and accounting professional in a support role. I am an avid reader of poetry who loves everything about the natural world, from the sun and the moon to everything in between.
My best writing is inspired by observing the celestial bodies in the sky, and often spend my time daydreaming and gazing into the distance, searching for words to express my innermost thoughts.
I am also a Jamaican who has been living in Trinidad for the past 10 years. The things I love to do apart from writing are going to the gym, hiking and most things to do outdoors while also being open to trying any new experiences.
Feedback from readers
‘Thanks for being so courageous’
āI was on the right track when I decided weeks ago, to wait until the right time to read your deep and beautiful book of poetry. So alive, vibrant, always honest, humble yet bold and confident. I was transfixed in another world, as I kept on reading, eagerly, page after page. What you wrote is timeless, and, I can’t wait to read it againā¦ and again. Thanks for being so courageous, to share your life with others.ā ā S
āRare way of expressing yourselfā
āI’m just going to say this and you can take it as you will: I hate poetry and romance stuff but you have that rare way of expressing yourself that doesn’t make it off-putting.ā ā K
I have had similar experiences with other readers ranging between the two, some loved it a lot, a few are not typical poetry readers but found a few gems. What surprised them is that the poems are honest expressions of my life experiences.
Writing a follow-up book
I am currently writing a follow-up book to The Silent Love. It explores different themes and characters and follows experiences after the first book.
Also, very early works have begun on a novel where certain themes and experiences from my poems will be explored in more depth with a bit of exaggeration.
