Young children work very hard to answer the question, “Can you spell your name for me please?” Answering this question qualifies them to enter primary school and will be asked by many teachers for years to come.
Parents and teachers of students ages 2 to 5 can download these 26 free worksheets that carry 312 alphabet flashcards to teach their little ones how to spell their first, middle and last names.
Spell your name with capital and common letters
Each worksheet contains one letter of the alphabet 12 times. You get the common letter 6 times and the capital letter 6 times. This should cover children’s names that are spelt with one letter several times.
Marissa Samantha Williams is a full name that has the letter ‘a’ exactly 6 times. If a child’s full name has one particular letter more than 6 times, then you can simply print the document again.
You can also use these flashcards to help children learn to count. You can say, “Count the different letters that spell your name.”
How to tell the difference between similar letters
It is common for children to confuse the letters a and q; b and d; d and p; h and n; n and u; N and Z; m and w; and M and W. Since these letters have similar visual features, some children take a while before they can tell the difference.
Read the suggestions offered for teaching each letter. This will speed up the process of getting children to spell their names without struggling to remember the differences in letters.

Feed your printer with cardstock paper size 8.5 x 11 for the best quality flashcards. You may also use standard A4 paper as it helps them to learn in the same way. Avoid choosing glossy paper as it may not be suitable for colouring the letters.
Cut out and colour the alphabet letters
The flashcards are dotted for cutting and the letters are outlined for colouring so you can incorporate a fun activity. Provide children with a plastic safety scissors and coloured pencils or crayons.
Select the worksheets with the necessary letters and give the instruction, “Cut out and colour the letters that spell your name.” You may help them with this and watch their tiny hands and muscles get the exercise needed to start learning to write the different shapes and sizes of capital and common letters.
Spell your name with alphabet flashcards
Use only the flashcards with the letters in a child’s name to teach the spelling of it. Arrange the letters in order and spell the name aloud. Mix up the letters, put them back in order and say it aloud again. Do this at least 5 times.
Then, ask the student to put the letters in order. If correct, commend the child. If wrong, state, “Let us try it again.” Keep demonstrating and allowing the child the opportunity to keep on trying. Do this every day until the child becomes familiar with spelling his or her name.
Having patience is very important when teaching children. Avoid displaying frustration, disappointment and anger. Here are 26 alphabet worksheets for you to download and print for children to cut out, colour and give an answer when they hear “spell your name please”.
