Breadfruit chips

Breadfruit chips, the healthier snack

Homemade treats are always healthier than store bought ones, but there is often a trade-off. It would either require that you buy a whole lot of ingredients that you would not normally use or it would take a lot of time and effort to prepare. Breadfruit chips on the other hand can be done in as little as 15 minutes.

Breadfruit chips chunks

Breadfruit chips are made with the dry fleshy pulp of the breadfruit when green, and buttery when half-ripe or ripe. If you slice the green breadfruit chips thinly and add salt, the taste is similar to potato chips.

When sliced thick, it tastes like freshly baked bread. The riper the breadfruit the sweeter the flavour of your breadfruit chips.

Benefits of breadfruit chips

There are also several health benefits to get from eating breadfruit chips. Breadfruit is used for arthritis, asthma, back pain, wound healing, ear infections, and other conditions.

It may also lower blood pressure by decreasing heart rate and weakening the force of heart muscle contractions. However, there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses.

DIRECTIONS

Peel the breadfruit.

Cut it into quarters and then slice.

After you have sliced the breadfruit you then deep fry them.

The length of time it takes to fry would depend on how thinly the breadfruit was sliced.

If you have access to a mandolin, you can slice them very thinly and the result would be like potato crisps.

You can slice them by hand and the chips would be crispy on the outside and buttery on the inside.

The first time you try this recipe, we recommend not adding any salt or seasoning. You would be surprised that most people would love plain fried breadfruit chips as they possess a naturally sweet, savoury flavour.
