Children scribble, colour and squeeze slime at an early age to strengthen the tiny muscles in their hands. When they draw shapes and colour within the lines, they show that they can control a pencil or crayon. This is the time for them to start tracing letters and learning to write. By age 5, they should be able to respond to the instruction, “Write your name.”
Being able to say, spell and write your name is a major qualification for entering primary school and would have to be done for the rest of a person’s life. Children are asked to “write your name” on all their books, a school’s sign-in sheet, at the top of an assignment or test, and to sign up for sports or field trips along with their parents’ signature.
How to use ABC worksheets for writing name
Parents and teachers of students ages 2 to 5 can teach children to spell their names using these free flashcards. Then, the children can learn to write their names using the 27 free worksheets in this article.
The first worksheet contains all the letters in big type for the child to get the hang of tracing. The other 26 worksheets consist of ruled pages with each letter of the alphabet in small type as the child would be expected to write in a book.
You may select the worksheets with the letters in your child’s name for the child to get practice with those letters in a particular order.
Write your name with capital and common letters
Each worksheet contains one letter of the alphabet in both capital and common forms. If a child’s name is Toby David Smith, you may select the worksheets with the letters Tt, Oo, Bb, Yy, Dd, Aa, Vv, Ii, Dd, Ss, Mm, Ii, Tt and Hh.
Starting with the Tt worksheet, let the child trace the capital T from start to end. When completed, ask the child to write “T” on the line at the top of the page next to the word “Name”.
Using the Oo worksheet, let the child trace the common o from start to end. When completed, ask the child to write “To” on the line at the top of the page on that worksheet.
Do this for each letter until the last worksheet states the child’s full name “Toby David Smith”.
On completion, the child can use a notebook to continue writing his or her name freehand. Some children learn faster than others so it may not be necessary for a child to trace all the letters on a worksheet.
It is up to the parent or teacher to recognise when a child seems to be ready to write the letter freehand at the top of the page.
How to tell the difference between similar letters
It is common for children to confuse the letters a and q; b and d; d and p; h and n; n and u; N and Z; m and w; and M and W. Since these letters have similar visual features, some children take a while before they can tell the difference.
Read the suggestions offered for teaching each letter. This will speed up the process of getting children to write their names without struggling to remember the differences in letters.
