Earth Day 2021 is different from all that has been celebrated since its inception in 1970. The difference this year is that we could see for ourselves what the world would look like if we were to reduce the human impact on the environment.
Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the lockdowns basically brought global industry to a halt. Factories were shuttered, airlines grounded and, all who could, stopped commuting to the office and worked from home. Almost immediately, weather patterns changed, nature started to recover from the ceaseless assault that had become the norm.
Air quality improved – Earth Day 2021
Since Global Warming/Climate Change became an issue, temperatures around the world were being tracked. Now that 2020 has come and gone, there is data to which meteorologists could refer. Below is a series of images of the sub-continent of India. These images span the period of 2016 to 2020.
As COVID-19 spread during early 2020, and stay-at-home measures were mandated country by country, the need for travel lessened. Emissions were reduced and air quality improved globally. Countries that were noted to have some of the most polluted air in the world saw a dramatic improvement in air quality. The pollution in countries like India and China has been documented to shorten the lifespan of its inhabitants. So improving air quality is not just about nature, but the quality of life for us humans as well.

Environment and economic savings
Working remotely has demonstrated that a lot of the things that we have grown accustomed to may not be necessary. Driving to and from work for some people may not be imperative. Flying across the world to seal a deal may not be required. Even investing in business suits for work may no longer be needed. This is one of the few instances where saving the environment may lead to actual economic savings. Aside from that, there are also countless manpower hours saved by not having to sit for hours commuting back and forth from the office.
Lets slow down climate change
2020, as we all may remember, was not all flowers and rainbows. Many businesses failed because of the cessation of travel. Airlines, travel companies and even countries that depend on petroleum have suffered poor sales. We are not advocating an end to modern living in order to save the planet, but a balance between what was done prior to the pandemic and what is going on currently will go a long way. Global air quality will improve and so will the quality of life of the earth’s inhabitants. We must all pitch in and do something to at least slow down climate change so that the Earth will be a healthy place to live for our children and grandchildren.
This year, Earth Day focusses on Climate Literacy. The official website for Earth Day states,
Climate change and other environmental degradations have broken our natural systems, leading to new and fatal diseases as well as a breakdown of the global economy. But just as climate change and coronavirus painfully remind us of the harm we’ve caused, Restore Our Earth reminds us of the opportunities that lay ahead.
We must Restore Our Earth not just because we care about the natural world, but because we live on it. Every one of us needs a healthy Earth to support our jobs, livelihoods, health & survival, and happiness. A healthy planet is not an option — it is a necessity.
One effort after Earth Day 2021 will be our global push for climate literacy, so the leaders of tomorrow can prepare solutions today.
