1. Maracas Waterfall – The tallest and most iconic in Trinidad

Located just outside Port-of-Spain, Maracas Waterfall is the tallest in Trinidad, standing at approximately 91 metres (300 feet). This natural wonder is set within the lush Maracas Valley and is a must-see for nature lovers.

The trail to Maracas Waterfall is a gentle 30 to 40-minute hike through secondary forest, making it ideal for families and beginners. Along the way, hikers often spot tropical birds, butterflies, and even agoutis. The waterfall itself is slender and elegant, cascading down a sheer rock face into a shallow plunge pool suitable for cooling off.

How to get there: Drive through St Joseph, turn into the Maracas Valley, and park near the Waterfall Road trailhead.
Tip: Visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy the cool misty air.

The falls are surrounded by thick tropical forest and the sound of parrots and other exotic birds fills the air. Visitors can climb to the second and third tiers for a more secluded experience, though caution is advised as the rocks can be slippery.

How to get there: From Scarborough, drive east to Roxborough. The entrance is clearly marked, and there’s a small fee for access.

Tucked deep in the rainforest near Blanchisseuse, Avocat Waterfall (also known as Gran Fond Falls) is a powerful cascade that plunges into a deep basin surrounded by moss-covered boulders. This is one of the most picturesque waterfalls in Trinidad.

To reach Avocat, visitors must hike through the rainforest and wade across sections of the Marianne River. The hike takes about 45 minutes and requires moderate fitness. It’s often part of a river-liming experience, where hikers bathe and picnic along the riverbanks before reaching the falls.

How to get there: Drive along the North Coast Road to the Blanchisseuse area. Park near the bridge over the Marianne River and follow the trail upstream.
Tip: Go with a guide if unfamiliar with river hikes; heavy rains can make the river dangerous.

The trail offers breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea, and once at Paria Bay, a short river trek inland reveals the spectacular Paria Falls. Surrounded by towering rocks and dense foliage, the falls cascade into a refreshing emerald pool. The entire journey offers an immersive experience of Trinidad’s rugged north coast.

How to get there: Start at the spring bridge in Blanchisseuse and follow the coastal trail west.
