New normal: Children lack interest in the real world

Before the pandemic, a lot of children lacked interest in playing outside and having face to face interactions with others. Whether they liked it or not, they were obligated to head out to the physical world to school and family gatherings to interact with people. This break from their devices gave their lives some balance and opportunity to experience new things. Unfortunately, the pandemic brought on a new normal that has left them stuck in the virtual world with little interest in reality.

Never ending break

During the lockdown in 2020 which was longer than their Summer vacation, some children were hardly affected by the restrictions since they lived on their devices as always.

Unfortunately, the break never ended and the new normal is for them to live in the virtual world. They go to school, play games and socialise online. While they were probably living the dream at first, the routine seems never ending and may soon become monotonous.

No child’s play in public places

The new normal brings a world without child’s play in public places. The playgrounds are quiet. The malls’ toy stores and games’ world are empty. Children don’t participate in swimming, football, baseball, gymnastics or after school playtime at parks as before.

The year 2019 may be the last time public pools hear the screams and laughter of children for a long time. Even when the pandemic is over, what interest would these children have in the outside world? When they grow up and have children, what childhood stories would they share with them? The future seems bleak with very little room for recreation in public places with the new normal.

Children’s health and the new normal

A great concern among parents during the pandemic is the mental and physical health of their children. With little face to face interaction with friends, children hide behind filtered profile photos. They develop a low self-esteem and fear of being seen in real life.

The lack of contact sports at school has made many children physically unhealthy. Since they can simply show filtered head shots on social media, there is no urgency to become fit.

Also, with little exposure to awkward meetings with new people, children are prone to lack socialisation skills in the real world.

Parents have not lost all control

Parents may feel helpless in the situation. One minute they have full control over their children’s screen time and the next minute they don’t. Parents have to sit by and watch their young ones spend hours on their devices. Even the parents of teenage children cannot offer career advice at this point since there is too much uncertainty.

On the positive side, parents can take control of the situation in their own home. While children cannot go to the mall, movies, school and playground, they can do family activities inside the house and in the backyard. This is an opportunity for parents to go old school and bring out the board games like Scrabble, Monopoly, Pictionary and Charades. Have fun movie nights with popcorn and snacks, barbecues and pool parties outside. For exercise, get the whole family to do Zumba exercises using YouTube videos. The pandemic may have control outside of your home, but inside you are in charge.

Future jobs with the new normal

There are several careers that are flourishing with the new normal. Our children will definitely prosper in the health industry and fields that are online. Some of these are hospitals, banking, shopping, gaming, streaming movies, music, blogging, web designing, and social media influencing.

However, some fields are not doing so well during the new normal and may not survive in the future. Our children should be careful if they have interest in hospitality, entertainment, retail, real estate, malls, restaurants, sports and fitness. Since these businesses involve physical socialising, patrons steer clear of them for their safety.
