Laylat al-Qadr, also known as the Night of Power, is one of the most sacred nights in Islam. It marks the night when the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through the Angel Jibril (Gabriel). This night, described as “better than a thousand months” (Qur’an 97:3), is a divine opportunity for Muslims to seek forgiveness, blessings, and spiritual elevation.
While the exact date of Laylat al-Qadr is unknown, the 27th night of Ramadan is widely regarded as the most likely night based on Hadith. The Prophet (PBUH) encouraged Muslims to seek it in the last ten odd nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th). This article explores the significance of Laylat al-Qadr, its virtues, and practical ways to maximise worship on this blessed night..
The significance of Laylat al-Qadr in Islamic tradition
1. The night the Qur’an was revealed
Allah (SWT) says in Surah Al-Qadr:
“Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.” (Qur’an 97:1-3)
This night symbolises divine mercy, guidance, and the beginning of Islam’s final revelation.
2. Angels descend with divine decrees
On Laylat al-Qadr, angels, led by Jibril (AS), descend to earth with Allah’s decrees for the coming year. The night is filled with peace and blessings until dawn (Qur’an 97:4-5).
3. A night of forgiveness and answered prayers
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“Whoever stands (in prayer) on Laylat al-Qadr out of faith and hope in the reward of Allah, all his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
This makes it a prime opportunity for repentance and supplication.
How to maximise worship on Laylat al-Qadr
1. Engage in prolonged night prayers (Qiyam & Tahajjud)
Perform Tahajjud (late-night voluntary prayers) with sincerity.
Recite long Surahs or portions of the Qur’an in prayer.
Follow the Sunnah by praying in units of two rak’ahs.
2. Increase Dhikr (remembrance of Allah)
Recite:
SubhanAllah (Glory to Allah)
Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah)
Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)
La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah)
The Prophet (PBUH) also recommended:
“Say: اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي”
(O Allah, You are the Pardoner and love to pardon, so pardon me.) (Tirmidhi)
3. Recite and reflect on the Qur’an
Complete Khatm al-Qur’an (finishing the Qur’an) if possible.
Reflect on the meanings, especially Surah Al-Qadr (97) and Surah Al-Dukhan (44).
4. Make heartfelt dua (supplication)
The last part of the night is the best time for dua (Qur’an 17:78-79).
Ask for:
Forgiveness for past sins
Guidance in faith and life
Barakah (blessings) in wealth, health, and family
Protection from trials and hardships
5. Give charity (sadaqah)
Even small acts of charity carry immense reward on this night.
Donate to mosques, the needy, or Islamic causes.
6. Seek solitude (I’tikaf)
If possible, observe I’tikaf (seclusion in the mosque) during the last ten nights.
Dedicate time to worship, Qur’an, and self-reflection.
7. Avoid distractions & focus on spirituality
Limit social media, entertainment, and idle talk.
Spend time in remembrance of Allah and self-purification.
