No man is an island according to John Donne yet millions of people end up alone struggling to cope with mental health issues. This may occur because they feel rejected, abused, financially unstable, or have a mental disorder. World Mental Health Day is a progressive step forward to shine light on this occurrence and make changes to support these persons.
A lot of people smile every day and suffer in silence with stress, anxiety and depression. Some may lash out on others who may also be battling with mental health issues. According to the American Psychiatric Association, depression is a medical condition that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. When alone, these people overthink, worry, self-loathe, have no drive to do anything and have suicidal thoughts. This can worsen when they deal with insensitive people on a daily basis.
Mental Health in an Unequal World is the theme for World Mental Health Day on October 10, 2021. The World Health Organization states that the purpose of this day is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilise efforts in support of mental health.
Research shows that 1 in 5 adults experience mental illness and millions of youths aged 6 to 17 experience a mental disorder. These figures can be reduced drastically if everyone did their part to make the world a better place. Here are 5 easy ways that you can be nice to people and contribute to the mission of World Mental Health Day.
World Mental Health Day – 5 easy ways to be nice
1. Listen to people
When people share their problems with you, do not be hasty to offer your opinion on how they should fix it. They may seem clueless but their brains are working out the kinks to sort out the issues. After talking it out, they get it off their chest and move on with their lives. This World Mental Health Day, try to be the listening ear that someone needs to cope with their daily struggles.
2. Give advice only when asked
No one likes unsolicited advice so do not go around sharing it out. If you think your way is better, then keep it to yourself. Telling a person what you think about their choices can be very hurtful for many, even though your intention is to help. People do everything they can to get through a tough day so telling them that their best is not good enough can add stress to their lives. So, give advice only when asked.

3. Offer real assistance
A lot of people are well known for dishing out advice but not offering any real assistance. Telling someone to stop worrying, leave an abusive relationship, lose weight, or make more money is easier said than done. How about doing something fun with the person, offering them a safe place to stay, starting an exercise regimen together, or giving money to better a situation.
4. Motivate people to treat others well
Watching people treat others badly and doing nothing about it helps to increase the cases of mental health issues worldwide. You may know someone who is abused and not report it. You may listen to a rumour about a person and help spread it. A video that shames a person may hit your phone and without thought you may share it with friends on social media. This World Mental Health Day, spread the word to all your friends to stand up against these actions and start treating others better.

5. Know when to call a professional
Depression does not choose to hide when you are around. So, it is wise to take a hint and observe when something is seriously wrong. If a person is on medication for depression, make sure that it is taken as should. You should listen to the person and observe their actions during this time. A person with depression struggles with finding purpose in life and have suicidal thoughts. If the person refuses to take the medication or starts talking about death, then make the call to his or her therapist or call the suicide hotline.
