Vendors at traffic lights on the highway

“Nuts, nuts, salt and fresh,” is the call of the Rastafarian nuts vendors on the streets of Trinidad and Tobago. They can be seen walking in between vehicles at red traffic lights on the main road and highway selling their snacks to commuters.

Some even offer the goodies on the pavements of the cities. The fresh or salted peanuts are packaged in brown paper bags and the honey roasted peanuts come in labeled bags. These unorthodox vendors are well known for asking society for pardon to “make an honest living”. Hungry supporters would shout from their vehicles, “Nuts man, bring a salt and fresh for me!”

Juice and water vendors on the highway

You are very thirsty and many miles away from your destination. As you hit a red traffic light on the highway, the juice and water vendors appear in front your vehicle offering you a cold beverage in the middle of the road. This is one time you would hope that the red traffic light does not turn green as you struggle for your change to make the purchase. Be prepared to spend a little more on your beverage from these unconventional vendors who take pride in quenching the thirsts of drivers conveniently.

Fruit and vegetable vendors on the highway

“Plums, plums, plums, twenty dollars,” says the young vendor walking up to your vehicle’s window on the highway. You don’t need plums but he looks you in the face with those pitiful eyes. You stretch for your money and you give him a sale because you know he is trying to make an “honest living”. These vendors also sell oranges, chives, celery, pimento peppers, and anything in anything in season that commuters would purchase from them on the highway.
