Mortal Shell II console beta now live: What players need to know about the open test and the game’s editions ahead of August 20 launch

The Mortal Shell II console beta is now live on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, giving players access to the opening three hours before the game launches worldwide on August 20, 2026. The free console beta arrived on July 31, following the successful Steam beta that launched on June 5 and surpassed 500,000 downloads.

The test provides a substantial preview of Cold Symmetry’s expanded dark-fantasy action RPG, including its opening Prologue, first explorable region, Shell-based combat, optional dungeons, mini-bosses and major encounters.

Beta progress does not transfer in full, but players who reach Marrow Keep can unlock a Prologue-skip option for the full game, while qualifying participants can claim the exclusive Flayed Harbinger cosmetic.

Mortal Shell II will launch digitally on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Standard and Devout digital editions and a PS5-exclusive physical Revered Edition. The Devout Edition adds the Obsidian skin set and up to 72 hours of Advanced Access, while the Revered Edition targets collectors with physical and digital extras.

Key takeaways

  • The console beta gives PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players roughly three hours of Mortal Shell II.
  • Beta currencies, weapons, Shells and collectibles reset when the full game launches.
  • Reaching Marrow Keep unlocks a Prologue-skip option for the full release.
  • Playing the beta for more than 30 minutes unlocks the Flayed Harbinger cosmetic.
  • Mortal Shell II launches worldwide on August 20, 2026, with Advanced Access beginning August 17.

Mortal Shell II console beta is now available

The arrival of the Mortal Shell II console beta marks an important stage in Cold Symmetry and Playstack’s final preparation for the sequel’s worldwide release. Beginning July 31, 2026, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S owners were given access to the same opening beta content that had already been available on Steam.

The developers have described the console release as a direct response to player demand, with bringing the beta to consoles reportedly becoming one of the most frequently requested features from the community.

The timing is significant. Mortal Shell II is scheduled to launch worldwide on August 20, leaving only a little over two weeks between the console beta’s arrival and the full release. Rather than functioning as a traditional closed technical test, the beta operates as a substantial public preview of the finished game’s opening hours. It allows prospective players to assess the sequel’s combat, exploration, atmosphere and technical performance before deciding whether to purchase the full release.

The beta is free, and there is no requirement to pre-order the game or purchase a premium edition to participate. On PlayStation 5, the beta is distributed separately from the full game, while Xbox players can locate the Mortal Shell II Open Beta through the relevant Xbox storefront. The console test is available independently of the full game’s commercial editions.

For PlayStation players, the full game’s Standard Edition is officially listed at US$49.99, while the Devout Edition is US$59.99. The PlayStation Store confirms that the Devout Edition includes the full game, an Obsidian skin set for all eight playable Shells and up to 72 hours of Advanced Access.

What the console beta actually contains

The Mortal Shell II console beta is considerably more substantial than a conventional short-form demo. Players receive access to the opening three hours of the full game, beginning with the Prologue and extending into the first explorable region of the interconnected world.

The opening establishes the Harbinger, the protagonist at the centre of Mortal Shell II’s story. The Harbinger is tasked with recovering the Ova of the Undermether in a world populated by hostile forces, grotesque creatures and warriors whose remains can become vessels for the player character.

The Shell system remains fundamental to the sequel. Rather than treating character progression as a single fixed identity, Mortal Shell II allows players to discover the dormant remains of fallen warriors and possess their bodies. Each Shell provides a different combination of attributes, abilities and combat possibilities. The beta introduces Tiel, the Acolyte, who is one of the eight playable Shells planned for the complete game.

That system builds directly on the central concept established by the original Mortal Shell, released in 2020. The first game was developed by Cold Symmetry as a deliberately focused soulslike action RPG, distinguishing itself through its possession mechanic and the ability to inhabit the bodies of fallen warriors. Mortal Shell II retains that conceptual foundation while substantially increasing the scale and freedom of the experience.

Within the beta, players can cleanse beacons, investigate optional dungeons, discover hidden challenges and confront mini-bosses before progressing towards Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods. The result is a genuine sample of the game’s exploration structure rather than a disconnected combat arena or specially constructed demonstration level.

This distinction matters because exploration is one of the sequel’s principal departures from its predecessor.

Mortal Shell Enhanced Edition - Deluxe Set - PlayStation 5
Mortal Shell is a ruthless and deep action-RPG that tests your sanity and resilience in a shattered world. As the remains of humanity wither and rot, zealous foes fester in the ruins. They spare no mercy, with survival demanding superior awareness, precision and instincts. Track down hidden sanctums of devout followers and discover your true purpose.
  • Possess Lost Warriors – The lost remains of defeated warriors are yours to discover. Awaken these Mortal Shells, occupy their bodies and significantly open your understanding to diverse masteries of combat.
  • Face Formidable Foes – Your path is guarded by adversaries, devoted to inscrutable gods. Behold creatures both pitiable and grotesque and muster your courage and face them down.
  • Iron Sharpens Iron – Combat is strategic, deliberate, and unforgiving. Commit your sword only when an opportunity opens.

From focused soulslike to interconnected open world

Mortal Shell II is designed as a standalone sequel, meaning newcomers are not expected to have completed the 2020 original before starting the new game. At the same time, returning players should recognise the series’ defining concepts, particularly the possession of Shells and the emphasis on deliberate, high-risk combat.

The largest structural change is the world itself. Cold Symmetry describes Mortal Shell II as an interconnected open world that is expansive while remaining deliberately compact. Instead of constructing an enormous map primarily to create scale, the developers have focused on interconnected routes, optional areas, hidden discoveries and multiple opportunities for exploration.

This approach is particularly important to the sequel’s identity because the world is designed to support experimentation. Players can encounter Shells, weapons, upgrades, curiosities and narrative information away from the most direct route through the game. Exploration therefore becomes part of character development rather than merely a way of reaching the next major objective.

Combat has also been expanded. Mortal Shell II retains the punishing structure associated with the soulslike genre while introducing faster and more unrestricted encounters. Weapon design has greater depth, with additional upgrade options intended to provide more room for players to develop specific approaches to combat. Playstack and Cold Symmetry have positioned the sequel as a dark power fantasy in which the player can combine different Shell abilities with increasingly sophisticated weapons and upgrades.

The beta is consequently important because it gives players enough time to determine whether these changes work for them. Three hours is sufficient to experience the basic rhythm of exploration, combat, progression and Shell possession without revealing the broader structure of the full game.

What happens to beta progress?

One of the most important questions surrounding the console beta concerns progression. Players should not approach the test as an opportunity to permanently accumulate equipment before launch.

The majority of beta progression will be reset when Mortal Shell II releases. Currency, weapons, Shells, collectibles and other items discovered during the beta do not carry over into the full game. The developers have deliberately imposed this restriction to protect the balance and progression structure of the finished experience.

There are, however, two meaningful benefits that do survive.

The first is linked to progression through the beta itself. Players who progress beyond Marrow Keep unlock an option to skip the Prologue when starting the full game. This is particularly useful for players who complete the beta thoroughly and intend to purchase Mortal Shell II at launch. Rather than forcing returning beta players through exactly the same opening sequence, the game recognises that they have already experienced it.

The second reward is cosmetic. Players who participate in the beta can unlock the Flayed Harbinger, an exclusive cosmetic reward that can be claimed in the full game at launch. The console announcement specifically states that players who spend more than 30 minutes in the console beta can receive the reward. The participation benefit is therefore accessible without completing the entire three-hour preview.

The arrangement strikes a practical balance. Players are given a reason to participate while avoiding the economic and progression problems that would arise if beta currencies, weapons and character development transferred directly into the launch game.

ARISE, HARBINGER. Cleanse a ravaged world. Dethrone false gods. Claim what’s yours. Mortal Shell II is a standalone sequel to Mortal Shell that significantly expands on the original with faster and unforgiving combat, deeper weapon design with extensive upgrade options, and an emphasis on free exploration within a compact open world.
Mortal Shell II – Revered Edition includes:
  • The game in physical format, 2 pre-order bonus skins (Obsidian & Skeletal Harbinger), plus these exclusive items:
  • A stunning 100+ page softcover Artbook highlighting the game’s uniquely eerie and grotesque art direction.
  • An ominous Steelbook.
  • 3 uncanny Fine Art Prints.
  • In-game cosmetics exclusive to the Revered Edition (to be revealed later).
  • All contents of the edition packed into a gorgeous collector’s tuck-in box.

Why the steam beta matters to the console test

The console beta is not launching into an untested environment. Steam players have already provided Cold Symmetry and Playstack with a substantial amount of early feedback.

The Mortal Shell II Open Beta launched on Steam on June 5, 2026. According to Playstack and Cold Symmetry’s announcement, the test surpassed 500,000 downloads during its first weeks. Contemporary reporting also recorded a 93% positive rating across more than 1,800 Steam reviews at that stage.

The Steam beta has continued to receive a very positive reception. The current Steam listing shows the beta with more than 2,000 English-language reviews and a 93% positive rating, although review totals and percentages can change as additional players submit feedback.

Those figures are significant for an independent action RPG because the beta has generated a large sample of player reactions before release. More importantly, the console rollout allows PlayStation and Xbox players to assess the game on the hardware on which many will ultimately play it.

This is particularly relevant for a title whose combat depends on responsiveness, timing and consistent performance. Soulslike combat leaves little room for unpredictable input latency, frame-rate instability or control problems. A console beta therefore has value beyond marketing. It gives developers another opportunity to identify technical issues and gives players an opportunity to judge whether the experience feels appropriate on their chosen platform.

The beta is explicitly described as an in-development build, meaning players can encounter bugs, performance problems and other unfinished elements. That distinction should remain important when interpreting early feedback. A beta is evidence about the current state of a game, not a guarantee that every technical characteristic will remain unchanged at launch.

Mortal Shell II standard edition

The Standard Edition represents the simplest route into the full game. It is priced at US$49.99 in the United States and is scheduled for digital release on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on August 20.

On PlayStation, the Standard Edition listing confirms the US$49.99 price and August 20 release date.

The Standard Edition is the appropriate reference point for understanding the game’s pricing strategy because it contains the core experience without the premium benefits associated with the Devout Edition. Players who do not need early access or additional cosmetic content can therefore enter the full game at the lowest standard digital price.

The beta itself does not require a Standard Edition purchase. Players can use the free test to establish whether Mortal Shell II’s combat and exploration systems suit their preferences before spending money on the full game.

Mortal Shell II Devout Edition

The Devout Edition is the premium digital option and costs US$59.99. Its most significant practical advantage is Advanced Access.

Players who purchase the Devout Edition can begin playing up to 72 hours before the general August 20 launch, with the listed access date beginning August 17. The PlayStation Store currently identifies August 17 as the Devout Edition release date.

The edition also contains the Obsidian skin set for all eight playable Shells. The cosmetic package is therefore broader than a single character skin, reflecting the game’s central Shell-based character system.

The Devout Edition is consequently differentiated in two ways. The Obsidian skins provide additional cosmetic customisation, while Advanced Access provides an earlier opportunity to play the full game. For players primarily interested in gameplay rather than physical collectibles, those are the principal reasons to move above the Standard Edition.

Mortal Shell II Revered Edition

The Revered Edition occupies a different position in the range. Rather than being a more expensive digital package, it is a physical collector’s edition exclusive to PlayStation 5.

Priced at US$69.99, the Revered Edition includes the game alongside a SteelBook, physical artbook, fine art prints and a collector’s box, together with digital extras. The physical edition was announced in April 2026, with Playstack and Cold Symmetry positioning it as the premium physical package for collectors.

Retail listings confirm the US$69.99 price and August 20 release date. Target’s listing identifies the package as including two pre-order bonus skins, a 100-plus-page softcover artbook, SteelBook, three fine art prints, exclusive in-game cosmetics and a collector’s tuck-in box.

The availability situation is more complicated than the pricing. Demand for the Revered Edition reportedly exceeded expectations, with the publisher acknowledging in July that supplies had been fully reserved across a growing number of markets. The company also warned that replenishment before launch was unlikely because of manufacturing lead times.

The Revered Edition is therefore particularly relevant to collectors who want a physical copy, but availability cannot be assumed simply because the game itself remains available for digital pre-order.

Why there is no Xbox Revered Edition

The absence of an Xbox physical collector’s edition is one of the clearest differences between the platforms.

Mortal Shell II’s Revered Edition is currently exclusive to PlayStation 5. Cold Symmetry has indicated that securing Xbox Series X|S certification within the manufacturing timetable required for a physical launch was not sufficiently certain, leading the company to concentrate its physical release on PS5 rather than risk delaying or cancelling an announced Xbox package.

This does not affect the availability of the core game on Xbox Series X|S. Xbox players receive the same full digital game and access to the Standard and Devout digital editions. The distinction concerns the physical collector market.

No PS4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch version has been announced. Mortal Shell II is being developed for contemporary PC and current-generation console hardware, with Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S forming the announced launch platforms. The Steam beta’s PC requirements also reflect a modern PC target, including DirectX 12, 16GB of RAM and an SSD requirement.

What the console beta says about the August 20 launch

The console beta has arrived at a strategically important point in Mortal Shell II’s development. The Steam test has already demonstrated substantial interest, while the console release expands that audience to the two current-generation platforms on which the full game will launch.

For players, the value is straightforward. The beta provides approximately three hours of actual game content, demonstrates the new open-world structure, introduces the Shell possession system and allows players to evaluate the sequel’s combat before buying it. The participation rewards add some longer-term value without turning the beta into an alternative to the full game.

For Cold Symmetry and Playstack, the console beta provides another opportunity to collect technical and gameplay feedback before the final release. The remaining period before August 20 is relatively short, so players should expect the beta to function primarily as a final public test and showcase rather than a representation of every aspect of the finished game.

The timing also places Mortal Shell II within an increasingly competitive 2026 release calendar. Its US$49.99 Standard Edition undercuts the pricing of many major premium releases, while the US$59.99 Devout Edition adds early access and cosmetic content without reaching the price of many high-end deluxe packages. The US$69.99 Revered Edition occupies a different niche by concentrating its additional value in physical collector material.

Is the Mortal Shell II console beta worth playing?

For PS5 and Xbox Series X|S owners interested in soulslike games, the console beta offers a particularly low-risk way to evaluate Mortal Shell II. It contains enough of the opening game to demonstrate the sequel’s central mechanical and structural changes, while the limited carry-over system prevents beta participation from undermining the launch progression.

Players who want the Flayed Harbinger cosmetic do not need to complete the entire preview. Spending more than 30 minutes in the console beta is enough to qualify for the reward, while progressing beyond Marrow Keep provides the additional Prologue-skip benefit.

Players should nevertheless approach the beta as a test build rather than a final technical review. The developers themselves identify the software as in development, and early community reports have already included individual observations about performance and control behaviour on particular hardware. Such reports are useful indicators, but they should not be treated as definitive evidence of the August 20 build.

What is already clear is that Mortal Shell II represents a considerably broader ambition than its predecessor. Cold Symmetry has retained the Shell possession mechanic that gave the original its identity while expanding the world, weapon systems and combat options around it.

Mortal Shell II’s console beta leads into the final countdown

The arrival of the console beta transforms Mortal Shell II from a PC-focused pre-release test into a broader public evaluation across all three announced launch platforms. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players can now experience the same opening content that generated significant interest on Steam, including the first three hours, Tiel the Acolyte, exploration, optional challenges and early encounters.

The important qualification is that most beta progress will disappear at launch. Weapons, currencies, Shells and collectibles are temporary, while the Flayed Harbinger cosmetic and the Marrow Keep Prologue-skip entitlement provide the meaningful permanent benefits.

The commercial structure is equally clear. The Standard Edition provides the core game at US$49.99, the Devout Edition adds the Obsidian Shell skins and up to 72 hours of Advanced Access for US$59.99, while the PS5-only Revered Edition provides the principal physical collector package for US$69.99.

With the worldwide release scheduled for August 20, 2026, the console beta is now the most accessible opportunity for current-generation console players to determine whether Mortal Shell II’s combination of soulslike combat, Shell-based character progression and interconnected open-world exploration delivers the evolution Cold Symmetry is promising.

The original Mortal Shell established a distinctive identity in 2020. Mortal Shell II is attempting to build that identity into a substantially larger action RPG without abandoning the mechanical principles that made the series recognisable. The console beta provides the clearest evidence yet of whether that expansion works.

For players considering the game before launch, three hours of free access, combined with limited but meaningful beta rewards, makes the test one of the most consequential parts of Mortal Shell II’s final pre-release campaign.
