Top 10 Carnival safety tips every reveller should know

1. Stay hydrated and energised

Carnival involves hours of dancing and walking under the sun. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Carry a reusable water bottle that can be refilled at designated water stations.

Avoid excessive consumption of caffeinated or sugary beverages, as they can dehydrate you. Light, nutritious snacks like fruits or energy bars are great for maintaining stamina without feeling too full.

2. Protect yourself from the sun

The Caribbean sun can be intense, and overexposure may lead to heat exhaustion or sunburn. Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 before heading out, and reapply every two hours or after sweating.

Use accessories like sunglasses with UV protection, wide-brimmed hats, or bandanas to shield your face and neck. Seek shaded areas periodically to cool down.

3. Dress comfortably

Choose breathable, lightweight clothing that allows for air circulation. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are recommended to protect your feet from accidental injuries or blisters.

If you’re wearing a costume, ensure it’s secure and doesn’t obstruct movement. Consider adding reflective strips to your outfit for enhanced visibility during nighttime events.

4. Secure your belongings

Pickpocketing and theft are common risks in crowded areas. Use a money belt or crossbody bag with secure zippers to keep your essentials safe.

Carry only what you need: an ID, a small amount of cash, a credit card, and your phone. Leave expensive jewellery and unnecessary valuables at home. Consider using a tracking device for your phone or wallet for added security.

5. Travel in groups

There’s safety in numbers. Stick with your group and designate a clear meeting point in case you get separated.

Share your plans and estimated return times with a trusted friend or family member who is not attending the event. Stay connected through messaging apps or walkie-talkies, especially in areas with poor cell reception.

6. Plan your transport

Arrange reliable transportation to and from Carnival events in advance. Use reputable taxi services, ride-sharing apps, or prearranged shuttles.

Avoid walking alone at night or in unfamiliar areas. If driving, ensure your vehicle is parked in a well-lit, secure area, and never leave valuables visible inside.

7. Drink responsibly

If you plan to drink alcohol, do so responsibly. Alternate alcoholic beverages with water to stay hydrated.

Never accept drinks from strangers or leave your drink unattended, as this increases the risk of tampering. Know your limits and avoid overconsumption, which can impair judgement and reaction time.

8. Follow local laws and guidelines

Be aware of local laws and respect regulations set by authorities. Prohibited items such as glass bottles or illegal substances should be avoided. Pay attention to security personnel’s instructions during parades and events, as they are there to ensure public safety.

9. Keep emergency contacts handy

Save important emergency numbers, including local police and ambulance services, in your phone. Have a fully charged phone with you and carry a portable charger to maintain battery life throughout the day. Familiarise yourself with nearby first-aid stations and police posts.

10. Know your limits

Carnival can be physically demanding. Listen to your body and rest when needed. Find a shaded or quiet area to recharge before jumping back into the festivities. Staying mindful of your physical condition ensures you can enjoy all the events without exhaustion or injury.

By following these Carnival safety tips, you’ll be well-prepared to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and excitement of the event. Prioritise safety, and you’ll create unforgettable memories that last a lifetime.
