Aspyr, in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics, has officially announced that Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2 Remastered will launch across a wide range of platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. Marking 25 years since the original release of Soul Reaver, this remastered edition is due out on December 10, 2024, bringing one of gaming’s most iconic vampire stories back into the spotlight for modern audiences.

Revisiting a classic – the story of Raziel

Released in 1999, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver redefined video game narratives with its deep, character-driven storytelling, fully voiced cut-scenes, and an ambitious world full of rich lore. At the heart of this epic is Raziel, a vampire lieutenant betrayed by his master, Kain, the vampire emperor. Thrown into the abyss and disfigured, Raziel returns eons later as a spectral wraith, seeking revenge and answers to his tortured fate.

As Raziel, players navigate the mysterious and decaying world of Nosgoth, shifting between the material and spectral realms to solve puzzles, engage in combat, and uncover the dark history of vampires and their power struggles. This remastered edition promises to preserve that intricate storytelling, alongside the unforgettable performances by Michael Bell (Raziel), Simon Templeton (Kain), and the late Tony Jay (the Elder God).

What’s new: Remaster pillars defined

For the Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2 Remastered project, Aspyr focussed on staying true to the original while upgrading the game to meet modern standards. According to Aspyr, they had access to the source code, allowing them to faithfully recreate the original combat, puzzle-solving, and exploration mechanics. By using the original game engine as a foundation, the remaster ensures the same balance, feel, and flow that veteran players remember from the late ’90s and early 2000s.

As a nod to the future, Aspyr has also included the option for players to switch between the classic and modernised visuals on the fly, offering a seamless transition between nostalgia and new tech. Despite the enhancements, this remaster will run without performance hits, offering smooth gameplay and immersive environments.

Gameplay and control improvements

Aspyr has taken special care to update Soul Reaver’s controls and camera mechanics to fit today’s expectations. Some key updates include:

Analogue controls: Soul Reaver was originally designed with D-Pad controls in mind, but the remaster optimises the game for modern controllers like the DualShock 4 and DualSense, offering a more fluid and precise experience.

Camera upgrades: The camera has been mapped to the right stick, allowing players to look around freely, including vertically, something the original game couldn’t offer. To complement this, new skyboxes and environmental details have been added, making Nosgoth’s vast world feel more expansive.

Trophy support: Aspyr has teased trophy support for iconic gameplay moments, though the specifics will be revealed closer to launch.

Map and compass: To help players navigate the open world of Nosgoth, a new map and compass have been introduced, offering guidance to new players while still encouraging exploration. The map was co-created by Aspyr, Crystal Dynamics, and key members of the Legacy of Kain community, adding a beautiful and fan-celebratory touch to the remaster.

Photo mode: A popular feature in recent remasters like Tomb Raider I-III, photo mode returns for Soul Reaver to let players capture Raziel’s most epic moments.

Visual enhancements – capturing ‘your memory’ of the game

Aspyr’s goal was to enhance Soul Reaver visually to match the way players remember the game from 25 years ago, but with modern graphics. Here are some key visual upgrades included in the remaster:

Higher fidelity cut-scenes: By digging into the archives and locating the original assets, Aspyr was able to render the cut-scenes with new models and improved fidelity, ensuring a smoother transition from gameplay to cinematic sequences.

Hero model upgrades: Raziel and Kain have both been redesigned to match their iconic look from the pre-rendered cut-scenes of the original game, with enhancements like glowing eyes and a visually stunning Wraith Blade.

Real-time shadows: Every character and object in the game now casts real-time shadows, making the world of Nosgoth more atmospheric and immersive.

New enemy and boss models: The remaster introduces new, scarier models for enemies and bosses, adding a layer of intensity to the game’s combat sequences.

Day and night cycle: Aspyr has restored a feature cut from the original release, introducing a dynamic day and night cycle in Soul Reaver, which brings new depth and mood to Nosgoth’s landscapes.

Graphics toggle: For purists, the ability to switch back to the original graphics is included, allowing players to relive the classic experience while also enjoying the enhancements Aspyr has introduced.
