Community-based tourism (CBT) is reshaping the global travel industry, empowering local communities to take charge of their cultural and natural assets. In Trinidad, this transformative approach is making waves, particularly in the vibrant communities surrounding the Nariva Swamp.
Supported by initiatives like Tourism Trinidad Limited’s (TTL) recent workshop, CBT is a vehicle for sustainable growth, cultural preservation, and economic empowerment. Here’s why Trinidad’s community-based tourism offerings stand out and how you can experience their authentic charm.
Nariva Swamp: A cradle of CBT innovation
Nestled in Trinidad’s southeastern corner, the Nariva Swamp is a biodiversity hotspot and a cornerstone of eco-tourism. Between November 12ā14, 2024, TTL, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and the Arts (MTCA), and the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) collaborated to host a pivotal CBT workshop at the BPTT Mayaro Resource Centre.
This workshop empowered 22 participants from surrounding areas like Manzanilla, Mayaro, and Plum Mitan, equipping them with the tools to create sustainable, locally managed tourism products.
Empowering communities
The workshop introduced participants to CANARI’s CBT Enterprise Handbook and focussed on critical areas like business development, operational improvement, and marketing strategies. Additionally, participants explored cultural, culinary, agricultural, heritage, and eco-tourism opportunities unique to their regions.
Acting Permanent Secretary Mr Videsh Maharaj captured the essence of this initiative, stating: “Community-based tourism is more than just exploring destinations; itās about creating authentic connections with people, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting environmental sustainability.”
CBT as a driver of sustainable development
Community-based tourism aligns with key objectives outlined in Trinidad’s National Tourism Policy (2021ā2030) and Vision 2030. It fosters niche tourism products, strengthens cultural industries, and aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By empowering communities, CBT enables locals to create unique, revenue-generating opportunities that preserve Trinidad’s natural and cultural heritage.
For TTL’s Destination Development Manager, Shaneil Sutherland, CBT is a powerful tool for sustainable development:
“At Tourism Trinidad, we promote community-based tourism as it inspires residents to develop and oversee their tourism offerings while protecting the environment and celebrating the uniqueness that defines their communities.”
