For years, tokers have grown cannabis seeds for a multitude of reasons. Can you use weed for stress, though? If so, can it play a valuable role in dealing with burnout and other work-related traumas? Let’s take a closer look.
Can you use weed for stress to help you cope with burnout?
Yes, you can use weed for stress and job burnout. Studies have shown that people who use weed have significantly lower stress and anxiety levels than those who don’t. The drug is so effective that it’s undergoing trials for use in people living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related conditions.

How many people use weed to help them cope?
According to a survey by cannabis provider Verilife, roughly 92% of Americans suffer the symptoms of burnout daily.
Of the 2,000 people who participated in the survey, 37% had used CBD products to help manage stress. A further 39% were toking for the same reason. The numbers rose significantly among younger people, with millennials being the most likely to use weed for stress and burnout-relief.
Of all the people who participated in the survey, 93% of tokers recommended weed for burnout. 29% of people who hadn’t used cannabis to manage anxiety had considered doing so.
8 ways cannabis can boost your physical performance
Why marijuana is an effective tool against burnout
Studies have proven that marijuana boosts physical performance, but why does weed help with stress?
The answer lies in the chemical makeup of the plant. Both species of marijuana, indica and sativa, contain cannabinoids. The best-known of them are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). These two chemicals have different but complementary effects, which include the release of endorphins.
Marijuana plants: What you need to know
Stress and anxiety are chemical reactions that result from a lack of positive endorphins like serotonin. Since toking cannabis helps to replace or increase these missing pieces, it can help to keep you on a more relaxed, even keel.
Does weed help with mental fatigue as well? Many users believe that it does, and there’s some evidence to support that.

CBD vs weed use
Consider CBD products for stress relief. While weed is a fantastic tool, not all employers will be willing for you to light up on the job. Toking may also have secondary effects that you probably don’t want to deal with at work.
CBD oils, gummies, and vape liquids can help you the same way marijuana would. They’re easier to use at work, entirely legal, and you can take another dose whenever necessary. You may also consider strains high in CBD but low in THC. These allow you to toke in the morning before work and should last for most of the day.
Potential disadvantages of using cannabis to manage stress
As with any medication, using CBD or marijuana plants to manage stress may have undesirable side effects. If you know what they are, you can easily manage them. Here are a few things to look out for and how to avoid any negative aspects:
- Cottonmouth or dry eyes – Any strain of cannabis, but especially those high in THC, can lead to dry eyes or a mouth that feels like it’s full of cotton balls. The key to dealing with these is drinking plenty of water and using over-the-counter eye drops.
- Compromised cognitive function – If you struggle to think, you’re probably using a strain with too much THC content. Choose a cannabis variety with less THC, use smaller doses, or toke up a while before work so the fuzziness can wear off.
- Difficulty concentrating or slower reaction times – If you’re feeling loopy or struggling to focus, you’re probably using too much weed at a time. Try taking smaller doses more often to help manage your stress without affecting your concentration.

If you work at a company that doesn’t endorse medical cannabis use, you may find it much easier to use CBD products in the office. When you get home, choose a relaxing strain to help you unwind and send you drifting off to sleep.
As with most medical conditions, you can manage anxiety and burnout with the right tools. Marijuana can be one of those tools, as long as you’re willing to take the time to learn how to use weed for stress well.
