How Mudanjiang is redefining winter tourism in Northern China.

Snow-ice tourism booms in Mudanjiang, China

With just 20 days remaining until the 9th Asian Winter Games in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang province, Mudanjiang is leveraging the spotlight to establish itself as a premier winter tourism destination.

Nicknamed the “Snow City”, Mudanjiang has become a social media sensation, celebrated for its stunning ice-and-snow landscapes and lively winter activities. Over the years, the city has made significant investments in developing its winter tourism offerings, turning its natural resources into a thriving economic sector.

Mudanjiang’s tourism initiatives include annual highlights such as an ice and snow festival and a winter fishing event. The Mudanjiang Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism has unveiled 15 boutique travel routes organised around 8 unique themes to cater to diverse traveller interests.

These curated routes connect Mudanjiang with key regional attractions, such as Snow Town, Harbin, and Yabuli Ski Resort—one of China’s top skiing destinations—offering visitors seamless access to the province’s best winter experiences.

Snow Town, famed for its prolonged winter season and whimsical mushroom-shaped snow formations, welcomed over 500,000 visitors last winter. This year, it has expanded its range of attractions, providing even more opportunities for winter enthusiasts to explore its snow-covered splendour.

“The scenery in the ‘Snow Town’ is especially beautiful. It’s the first time I’ve seen such a thick layer of snow on the rooftops. It’s stunning, and I really want to touch it. I like it here,” shared Wang Qiyao, a tourist from Shanxi Province. This season, Mudanjiang has seen a surge in visitor numbers, with tourists eager to immerse themselves in the city’s winter magic.

Another highlight of Mudanjiang is Hengdaohezi, a town steeped in history and charm. Originally established in the late 19th century during the construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway, it boasts 256 well-preserved Russian-style buildings, including six recognised as state-level heritage sites. The town’s rich architectural history and unique winter ambiance have made it a must-visit destination.

Jingpo Lake, another gem in Mudanjiang, offers visitors mesmerising winter views, including frosted trees and the thrill of traditional winter fishing. Tourists can witness fish being pulled from mile-long nets beneath the frozen lake, a spectacle that adds to the city’s allure.

Mudanjiang continues to embrace its role as a winter wonderland, blending cultural heritage with natural beauty to captivate travellers from around the world.
