Investing in Trinidad and Tobago is gaining international attention as the country positions itself as a leading hub for tourism development in the Caribbean. At the Tourism Investment Forum held on August 22, 2025, in Port-of-Spain, over 80 investors, hoteliers, financial institutions, and policymakers gathered under the theme “Unlocking our Tourism Investment Potential!” to explore opportunities in the twin-island republic. Hosted by Tourism Trinidad Limited (TTL) in partnership with the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the event demonstrated how the nation is actively reimagining its tourism model to attract sustainable and profitable investments.
Building on authenticity
In her opening address, Sonji Pierre-Chase, President of the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce, emphasised the importance of authenticity in tourism. She highlighted Carnival as a prime example of how culture and creativity can transform into an international economic driver. Her call was clear: tourism growth must be rooted in the unique spirit of Trinidad and Tobago. She urged stakeholders to channel this energy into ecotourism, sports, and cultural events, ensuring that investment in Trinidad and Tobago tourism delivers products that cannot be replicated elsewhere.
Government commitment to investors
Senator the Honourable Satyakama Maharaj, Minister of Trade, Investment and Tourism, delivered the feature address, declaring tourism as a pillar of economic growth alongside trade and investment. He outlined the government’s strategy to position Trinidad as a transatlantic hub, expanding airlift connections from Asia, Africa, India, and the Americas. The aim is to make Trinidad the epicentre of regional connectivity, ensuring easy access for travellers and investors.
The Minister also announced bold plans for product diversification, including medical, sport, and event tourism. A standout initiative is the proposed Carnival City at the Queen’s Park Savannah, which would serve as a permanent attraction for visitors year-round. This reflects the government’s ambition to extend Trinidad and Tobago’s signature cultural experience beyond the Carnival season.
Equally important, Minister Maharaj assured international investors of a favourable business environment. He promised that barriers to the ease of doing business would be removed, signalling that investing in Trinidad and Tobago is not only profitable but also practical.
Competitive incentives for investors
Cornell Buckradee, Manager of Investment and Business Development at TTL, showcased the nation’s investment incentives and development pipeline. Under the Tourism Development Act (TDA) 2000, investors benefit from attractive measures such as duty-free concessions, up to seven years of corporation tax exemptions, capital allowances, and accelerated depreciation. These fiscal incentives reduce entry costs and increase returns, making Trinidad and Tobago one of the most competitive destinations for tourism development in the region.
The forum highlighted hotel projects already underway, demonstrating tangible examples of investor confidence. These include HADCO’s redevelopment of the Asa Wright Nature Centre and the Mt. Plaisir Estate Hotel, and Nirogee Development Limited’s large-scale refurbishment of the Maracas Bay Hotel. Such projects illustrate how private investment is revitalising key assets and setting new standards for accommodation in the country.
Investor confidence and long-term growth
The forum’s credibility was further strengthened by testimonials from leading investors. John Hadad of HADCO Group, Deepak Lall of Qualitech and Nirogee Development, and Shaun Rampersad of Ramps Logistics shared their positive experiences in hotel development. Their accounts confirmed that returns on investment in Trinidad and Tobago’s tourism sector are viable and sustainable. These success stories highlight a pattern: investors who commit to Trinidad and Tobago are rewarded with strong growth prospects tied to authentic, culturally rich, and environmentally diverse products.
Such endorsements send a powerful signal to the global investment community. The tourism sector is not only open for business but also supported by a government determined to ensure long-term success.
Strategic diversification and sustainability
Investing in Trinidad and Tobago goes beyond hotels and Carnival. The forum underscored the country’s commitment to diversifying its tourism offerings to include nature reserves, health and wellness retreats, and adventure tourism. These initiatives align with global demand for sustainable travel experiences, giving Trinidad and Tobago a competitive edge in attracting eco-conscious travellers and investors alike.
By focusing on projects that balance profitability with sustainability, the nation positions itself as a leader in responsible tourism. Investors have the chance to engage in ventures that generate returns while contributing to long-term community and environmental benefits.
Why invest now
The Tourism Investment Forum marked a turning point in how Trinidad and Tobago presents itself to international investors. With government commitment, fiscal incentives, a growing development pipeline, and proven investor success stories, the country is ready to expand its tourism economy.
For global investors seeking opportunities in the Caribbean, investing in Trinidad and Tobago offers access to authentic cultural assets, strategic connectivity, and favourable economic policies. The time to invest is now, as the nation positions itself not only as a travel destination but also as a hub for profitable and sustainable tourism development.
