By Jevan Soyer. Inflation was a hallmark of the 1980s, the news was peppered with bulletins stating the constant devaluing of the exchange rate of CARICOM countries against the US dollar. People were having conversations about the high price of bread in Guyana. This gets us to the topic at hand, why you should make bread for yourself. Food prices are rising and bread is no exception. The increases may be due to international commodities price increases, supply chain interruptions or even global warming. One thing is certain, the price will go up.
If you have already been affected by the pandemic, and living on reduced income, then you should make bread without hesitation. I am sure you could remember your grandmother or grandfather saying, “When I was your age a bread was half cent.”
The economics of homemade bread
If there is one reason for you to make bread for yourself, it is the amount of money that you would save. The average house with 4 residents, 2 adults and 2 children, might go through 2 loaves of bread in a day, one for breakfast and the second for dinner. At a cost of TT$13 to TT$16, that gives an average cost of TT$14.50. Two loaves for 365 days give you a cost of TT$10,585 for the year. Since most families make a budget for the month, divide that amount by 12 to give you TT$882 per month.
If you were to make bread, what would be the monthly cost? From my experience, a 25-pound bag of flour lasts about one month and costs TT$65 to TT$70. A one-pound packet of yeast costs TT$27 to TT$30. The other inputs such as oil and sugar would most likely be in your kitchen already. If you are into gourmet breads, you would need additional ingredients such as eggs, butter, milk, raisins and oats. If these cost an additional TT$100, it would give you a grand total of TT$200. That means you would save TT$682 per month or TT$8,185 a year.
