Feeling lost: My children are different since learning online

I have lost my bright, energetic and enthusiastic children since they started doing online school. My children are different people from the ones I know them to be so I am writing this post to reach out to other parents who are experiencing this problem and would like to offer help or get assistance during this time.

      The children I know

My daughter has always been passionate about art, singing and dancing while my son was very active doing several sports. When they were unable to do extracurricular activities at their school, my husband and I provided them with equipment to use at home that would keep them active. Unfortunately, purchasing art tools, a song and dance machine, sporting equipment and a trampoline could not replace the enjoyment of socialising with friends.

      Lack of interest

They sleep a lot during the day, stare at their phones more than usual, care less about their appearance and personal hygiene and act bewildered when asked a question or given a simple instruction. It is very heart-breaking to witness this transformation within one year with my both children.

My children are different even with schoolwork

Usually, they were eager to do homework, projects and tests. They looked forward to receiving good grades and were self-motivated students with all their subjects. They did their best and were performing well for numerous years. But now, the attitudes of my children are different toward their schoolwork.
Suddenly, I have to monitor my children’s assignments and performance since the grades of my children are different and very disappointing. They sit in front the screen doing online classes for hours but then act like they have no idea what their teachers just said or asked them to do.

      Support for parents

I have spoken to several other parents and teachers at my children’s schools in Trinidad. I realise that there are a lot of other people who share my concerns. I was given some suggestions to try virtual tours, family games and movie nights which actually sparked some spunk back into my children. But the next day, they were back in their shells. The problem feels heavy and I am tired. I am willing to hear any suggestions.
